About Kevin

I have spent more than 30 years as a classroom educator at the middle school, high school, and college levels, teaching Government, History, Philosophy, Media Literacy, AI Literacy and Student Leadership. Over that time, I have worked with students across the full academic spectrum — from those significantly below grade level to advanced students pursuing college-level coursework while still in high school.

I believe students learn best through authentic experiences and projects that connect them to the world beyond the classroom. I have created dozens of student projects that promote social awareness and community engagement including an entirely student-run series of events that raised over $20,000 for Hurricane Katrina victims. Back in 2012, I created one of the first digital detox projects in the country that allowed students to take deep dives into the social and individual impacts of social media and digital technologies.

My work has never been confined to the classroom. I have designed curriculum, developed and led professional learning for teachers and administrators at the school, district, county, and state levels, and consulted with federal agencies on critical thinking, ethical leadership, and organizational communication. That breadth of experience means I understand not just how to teach content, but how learning actually works across different contexts, audiences, and levels of preparation.

My students have gone on to strong college programs, careers in public service, law, journalism, and education, and — more importantly — into adult life with the habits of mind that allow them to keep learning on their own.

I take tutoring seriously because I take students seriously. Every session is prepared, purposeful, and adapted to where your student actually is and where they personally want to go.

One of the most important things I've learned in my teaching career: students don't struggle with these subjects because they lack ability. They struggle because no one has made the content feel real, relevant, or worth caring about. My job is to change that — and then build the skills to go deeper.

How I Teach
I don't lecture. I use inquiry, dialogue, and reflection to pull thinking out of students rather than pour information into them. A typical session might begin with a provocative question tied to what your student is studying. There is no obvious right answer, and so we'll work backward through the evidence, the context, our assumptions and the reasoning needed to form a defensible position. This approach builds more than content knowledge. It builds deep critical and conceptual thinking skills that all students need.

What a Session Looks Like
Sessions are structured but flexible. We begin by identifying exactly where your student is stuck — whether that's a specific concept, an upcoming exam, an essay, or a general sense of confusion. From there, we work through the material together using discussion, questioning, and real-world examples that make abstract concepts concrete. I assign reflection prompts between sessions when appropriate, so progress doesn't stop when the session ends.

Who This Is For
I work well with three kinds of students:

Students who are struggling — falling behind, losing confidence, or convinced they're just "not a history person." I've spent decades working with students performing below grade level, and I know how to rebuild understanding without condescension.

Students who want to go deeper — intellectually curious kids who find their classroom too slow, too surface-level, or too focused on memorization. I offer the kind of Socratic dialogue most classrooms don't have time for.

Students seeking general enrichment — families who want their child thinking seriously about government, current events, ethics, or philosophy, regardless of what's happening in school.

What Sets Me Apart
Three decades in the classroom means I understand exactly where students get lost, what misconceptions are most common, and how to design the path from confusion to clarity. I've also designed curriculum, led professional development for educators, and consulted with organizations on critical thinking and leadership. I bring that same rigor and intentionality to every session.
