About Nisan
I’m Nisan, a Writer and Director with over a decade of experience creating both high-end series and award-winning independent films. My feature films Across the Sea and When I'm Done Dying won multiple international awards at festivals and received support from institutions including Berlinale, Eurimages, and the Hamburg Film Fund. In television, I directed for both seasons of Netflix’s Midnight at the Pera Palace, which remained in the Global Top 10 for over a month, and continued my work in series with Miramax and Paramount on The Turkish Detective (BBC, ARTE, SVT), collaborating with concept director Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo). Currently, I’m developing a new series and a new independent feature film. I hold an MFA in Film from Columbia University in New York and am a Fulbright Scholar. Beyond my own projects, I’m passionate about teaching because I know how valuable guidance can be when you’re navigating the creative process. I’ve been through the struggles of shaping ideas, facing rejection, and finding my own voice, and I love helping others unlock their potential and bring their stories to life. For me, teaching isn’t just about craft — it’s about empowering artists to trust themselves, develop their vision, and create work that resonates.

I offer a variety of courses covering every phase of visual storytelling, drawing on 10+ years of experience writing and directing two award-winning feature films and three seasons of series for Netflix and the BBC. For newcomers in screenwriting, I recommend starting with Fundamentals of Screenwriting and Character Development. If you have an idea but aren’t sure where to begin, Developing the Core of Your Story course will give you the tools to identify what makes an idea truly work. For more experienced writers, we can explore advanced topics such as: Crafting a Complex Protagonist, Dialogue as Rhythm, Tone in Writing, Efficient Storytelling, Unmasking the Theme of Your Story, The Art of Receiving Feedback, Breaking the Three-Act Structure, Discovering Your Voice, and Writing for a Micro-Budget Film. On the project development side, I provide mentorship in Script Revisions, Pitching, Packaging, Building the Right Team, Securing Funding/Greenlights, European Co-Productions, and Festival Strategies. If you’re feeling stuck with your screenplay or lost in the edit, I’ll help you reconnect with your original spark. Through soul-searching questions and practical methods I’ve used myself, I can guide you to dig deeper and uncover what your story is really about. I also teach Directing courses, where we’ll cover topics such as: Preparing for a Shoot, Directing on Set, Working with Actors and Rehearsals, Editing and Post-Production, Problem Solving and Crisis Management, Production Skills for Directors, and Shooting a Micro-Budget Film vs. Working with Major Studios. With experience across both arthouse and commercial filmmaking, I tailor my courses to suit your creative goals and preferred approach. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced filmmaker, I’ll help you sharpen your craft, unlock your voice, and bring your project to life.
