About Mary
Tutoring, for me requires a number of different skills: a good knowledge of the subject, an ability to teach, and a caring, supportive nature. For sensitive children in particular, praise and encouragement are of prime importance and can make an enormous difference to their performances at school. I was a sensitive child myself and one bad comment from a teacher when I was young affected me throughout my childhood and beyond, in terms of confidence and performance. The mind is a powerful thing - if you can believe you can do something, you generally will go on to do it, whereas if you believe you can, you might give up before you've even tried. A good tutor can help to instil confidence in a child, which might truly change their lives, and this is something I try extremely hard to do, with every student I work with. I aim to create a gentle, nurturing environment where the child feels comfortable and happy, and I've had in general, very good results. I have always had an interest in foreign languages. After university I spent four years in Japan, where I taught English and focused on becoming as fluent as possible in Japanese. I also lived in Italy for a few months and one of my goals this year is to improve my Italian as I go to the country regularly. Another passion is writing - I have had a number of short stories published and have been shortlisted in several competitions. I also adore physical exercise and have completed several marathons, triathlons and cycling sportives. I currently live in Hove so am available to teach students in the Brighton area. I also teach many of my lessons online.

Mary is my son’s English tutor and has tutored my son for the past year. My son is currently at a state primary school and I engaged Mary to help him prepare for the 10+ entrance exams for some very good private secondary schools. Mary is a caring and professional tutor, who is clearly very knowledgeable and was able to correctly assess my son's level and encourage, without overwhelming, him. Mary has stretched my son in the subject and his comprehension and essay work matured enormously. My son's confidence increased and he has become more ambitiouis in his writing. Mary was also happy to spend a lesson encouraging him to think about what he could say in answer to typical interview questions and how he would like to present himself. This gave my son a solid grounding before going into exams and interviews.
I would highly recommend Mary as an English tutor.

Mary ha been tutoring my 7+ son for prep school entrance exams in English has I have seen a vast improvement in his grammer, comprehension and writing style. Mary is extremely patient and gentle and son has thrived under her tutorlage. I have been so impressed by Mary's teaching skills I have now engaged Mary to teach daughter who is 4+. I would highly recommend Mary as she is a lovely lady and has a great rapport with children, whom bloom under her gentle steering.
