Before starting a lesson, I like to review what the exam boards are looking for. This helps me plan questions and structure lessons so that understanding comes first, followed by learning how to gain the marks needed for the qualification. I monitor students closely, asking where they struggle most, and I often come up with unusual explanations that tend to stick.

I enjoy tutoring because every student is different. My goal is to make the most of our lesson time without overwhelming them. Since many of my students come straight from school, I find they respond better to a relaxed and supportive environment rather than a strict one. My approach also focuses on building excitement for the subject. I keep encouraging them until they develop both the self-confidence and the practice needed to feel prepared for their exams.

I have experience working with students under several exam boards, including AQA, Edexcel (Pearson), OCR, WJEC, and CCEA

  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I discovered my passion for mathematics at an early age-when I realized just how satisfying it felt to solve problems that initially seemed unsolvable. My fascination continued throughout school, and as I pursued my Chemical Engineering degree, I consistently gravitated toward math-focused tasks. Tutoring began as a way to help friends and classmates who were struggling, but it soon became much more. I found that by breaking down complex concepts and watching my peers "click" with the material, I got immense satisfaction from teaching. This encouraged me to start tutoring professionally, first on a small scale with family friends and then more formally as I expanded my client base.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I primarily tutor secondary-level Mathematics, which can include Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Further Maths. I love the challenge of explaining abstract ideas in a way that becomes concrete and relatable. For instance, I enjoy showing how trigonometric identities aren't just formulas to memorize but actually describe real-world phenomena like wave motion or architectural designs.

One area that can be tricky is when students come in with a mental block-perhaps they've decided early on that they "just can't do" algebra or geometry. Turning that around can be challenging, but it's also one of the most rewarding parts of my job. While there isn't really a topic I like less, there are certainly ones that students typically find tougher, like proofs or complex equation manipulations. However, I see these as opportunities to show students that with the right approach and steady practice, no topic is truly out of reach.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely. During my A-level studies, my Maths teacher was someone who went beyond the curriculum. She introduced real-life applications for each concept, sometimes even bringing in engineering or physics examples to illustrate how these math skills could be used to solve genuine problems. Her enthusiasm and dedication showed me that teaching can be both rigorous and creative-something I continually strive to emulate.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor should first and foremost be patient. Students learn at different paces and in different ways, so having the patience to adapt is crucial. Next, empathy plays a big role-tutors need to understand a student's perspective and any anxieties they might have. Good communication skills are essential, allowing you to break down complex ideas into clear, digestible parts. Finally, consistency and punctuality build trust. When students know they can rely on me to be there, fully prepared, it sets the tone for productive lessons and continued improvement.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I recall one particular moment during my A-levels where a group of classmates and I were stuck on a notoriously difficult trigonometry problem. We debated various methods for nearly an hour and hit multiple dead ends. Eventually, our teacher came over and, with a single prompt-"Have you considered simplifying the expression before substituting?"-everything clicked into place. That experience taught me the importance of stepping back and looking for simpler approaches. It also underlined the value of good questioning techniques: sometimes, a single guiding question can unlock a solution that seemed impossible before.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still face in your subject?

Math can be intimidating for many, leading to anxiety and a fixed mindset of "I'm just not good at math." As a tutor, it can be challenging to dismantle that mindset. Another challenge is the fast-evolving nature of curricula and exam expectations-staying updated on changes from various exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC, CCEA) requires continuous learning. However, these challenges keep me motivated to refine my own methods and maintain a dynamic approach to teaching.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I genuinely love teaching. There's a unique joy in unlocking a student's potential and seeing them gain self-confidence in math. Beyond teaching, I also have a passion for problem-solving outside the classroom-whether it's looking at a puzzle, tackling a coding challenge in Python, or examining an engineering scenario. I enjoy taking a real-life problem and applying my mathematical background to arrive at creative solutions.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P)?

I believe it's the blend of my academic background, my unwavering dedication to my students, and my personalized approach. I strive to make math not just understandable but genuinely enjoyable. I tailor my lessons to a student's learning style and mindset, encouraging consistent progress without overwhelming them. My experience working with more than 100 students also means I bring tried-and-tested strategies to every session, along with the empathy, patience, and reliability that help students trust me and, more importantly, trust themselves.
