About Joshua
I'm a final-year Computer Science student at Durham University, on track for a First-Class degree, with seven years of tutoring experience across GCSE, A-level and Scottish Highers Mathematics.
Although my degree is in CS, Maths has always been the subject I love teaching. The problem-solving habits, the satisfaction of breaking a long multi-step question into something solveable and the way confidence builds quickly once a student stops being intimidated by notation are all part of what makes teaching maths great. I've taught the current Edexcel, AQA and OCR specifications at both GCSE and A-level, including Further Maths, and I'm familiar enough with the Scottish system to support National 5 and Higher students through their full course.
I tutor professionally through Edumentors and TutorChase, and spent my placement year as a Technical Project Manager at Procter & Gamble working on data-heavy projects. Applied statistics and modelling are a real part of how I think about Maths, not just an exam topic that gets covered for a few weeks and then forgotten.
For students taking Computer Science alongside Maths, I also offer specialist support for the A-level NEA, IB Internal Assessment and IB Extended Essay - see my separate Computer Science listing.

Each lesson is built around what's actually causing you to lose marks, not generic "topic revision". Sessions usually look something like this:
- A short look at recent homework, mocks or class tests to spot patterns in where marks are dropping
- A focused block on the topic we're working on, building from worked examples up to full exam questions
- Past-paper questions tackled under near-exam conditions, then marked against the real scheme so you can see exactly what examiners are looking for
- A short set of targeted practice questions to work on between sessions, with notes from the lesson kept for reference
I lean heavily on the "why" behind each method. Why does this approach work, why does this case need a different one, why did the mark scheme award two marks here and none there. Students who only memorise methods tend to plateau, with top GCSE grades just out of reach and A-level As not quite tipping over into A*s. Students who understand why a method works keep pushing, because they can adapt under exam pressure when a question doesn't look quite like the ones they've practised.
Lessons run online using a shared whiteboard with proper mathematical notation, so working stays clear and reusable afterwards. One hour is standard; thirty-minute top-ups in the week before a paper work well, and two-hour sessions are useful for sitting full past papers together.

I met Josh while at university, we completed our degrees at the same time. He has always been a hard working person with a strong work ethic. He has been a tutor before I even knew him, but I have observed that he always puts effort into his lesson plans and thinks about how he can best meet the needs of his students. Anyone would be lucky to have Josh as a tutor as he is very patient and calm person and has even helped me when we have studied together by breaking down complex concepts for me.
