About Marcos

Hi, my name is Marcos, I'm a professionally qualified musician and drum tutor with over 5 years of teaching experience and 15+ years playing gigs and festivals across the world.

I have a background teaching Trinity and Rock School grades for beginners to intermediates, and a plethora of experience improvising and personalising lessons also. As well as generic drum teaching, I offer drum coaching sessions for advanced and professional players to deepen their understanding of the kit and musicality, and hone their personality into their drumming sound.

In my own career, I've played with various projects and supported artists such as Nubya Garcia, Ibibio Sound Machine, Phoebe Green and more, as well as performing at popular festivals across the UK including Dot2Dot Festival, Farmfest, and Manchester International Festival. I’ve also done session work with multiple artists and producers including Femi Tahiru, Lei Hope, and Mick MacNeil from Simple Minds.

Hello! My name's Marcos Pires and I'd be delighted to help you explore everything that you want to know. Whether you're just looking for a fun new hobby or want to become a professional drummer and skilled musician, I can share my time and tools with you to teach you what you need to practice.

Whether you're a complete beginner or would like to take your existing drumming skills to an advanced level, I'm an expert at helping you to build and improve your technique and confidence behind the kit. We can focus on playing different music genres to improve your performance, creativity, and technical ability, before organically honing in on how you naturally want to play. I can tailor each lesson to you personally and will do so in the best way possible for you to effectively and comfortably explore the beauty of drums as a complex instrument.

I specialise in jazz, soul, funk and hip hop, but I'm accomplished in rock, pop, electronic, reggae and more. I can teach you how to develop your talent and knowledge in any style of drumming you wish by sharing years of experience as a global performer and teacher. We can explore the basic foundations of drumming, swung rhythms, ghost notes, displacement and more, as well as learn how to read sheet music as we go.

I'm half Portuguese and half English but living in Somerset where I invite students to play locally. I also teach online and have experience making this a comfortable dynamic even though playing drums online can be different to playing in person! Because of travelling and touring a lot, I teach drum lessons both in-person and remotely online, so that we can be consistent with anyone’s drumming journey in a fun and relaxed environment no matter where we are in the world.
