About Chris
I am a versatile, friendly and down-to-earth musician with a passion for music education. I have been teaching privately since I was 17 and have enjoyed working with a wide range of ages and abilities ever since. I graduated with a master's degree in music from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama with distinction and, previously, a 1st class music degree from the University of Birmingham in 2015. I now work as a professional music teacher, alongside conducting, orchestrating, performing and other freelance music roles. I am experienced and confident teaching children and adults of all ages on a 1-1 basis, or in small groups, classes, and workshops. The areas I specialise in are piano, keyboard, trumpet, cornet, music theory, composition, conducting, GCSE and A-level music and music technology. I have worked with Southend Music Service and Severn Arts (formerly Worcester Youth Music) as a conductor and teacher and where I completed safeguarding training and a DBS certificate. My further experience includes leading groups of children, and setting up my own classes on how to read music for adults, creating my own new resources. I have also worked for 2 weeks in a rural orphanage in South Africa working with groups of children aged from 0-18. In my private 1-1 teaching I have taught students from 4 years-old to 80 years-old and from complete beginner to advanced lessons. Other organisations I've worked with include Music For Youth, Town Hall Symphony Hall, Urban Crofters Church, Soel Music, the Aldeburgh Festival, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. As a practising musician, I have performed in bands, orchestras, jazz ensembles, chamber groups, early music consorts, accompanied soloists, and in recording sessions. I currently conduct CoMA Bristol (an amateur music group) and Worcester Intermediate Youth Orchestra, as well as guest-conducting other orchestras. Further work includes composing and orchestrating. My teaching is enhanced and informed by my wide range of experience and I can pass on to my students a real understanding of the music world.

I passionately believe that music has extensive capabilities to encourage creativity, to positively affect many areas of well-being for children and adults, and to lead to lifelong loving of music. I believe it can be accessed by anyone and should be available as an opportunity for everyone, regardless of age, ability or background. I tend to travel to pupils' homes to teach and can either bring resources or use material which students already own, as well as recommending new books/apps/websites etc. I have a modern, friendly and flexible approach to teaching but built upon experience and good technique. I am willing to adapt to the needs and aims of the students whatever their previous experience. Please get in touch if you have any questions as I'd love to start teaching lessons tailored for you.
