About John

# About Me

I'm a friendly, patient, native English-speaking American with a degree in Computer Science, a BA in History, and 30 years of professional experience as a software engineer.

Throughout my career, I've used logic, analytical thinking, and problem-solving to understand complex challenges. I enjoy explaining how things work and breaking difficult concepts into clear, manageable steps.

I previously tutored college athletes in mathematics while at university, and I've also helped teach my own children. These experiences have reinforced my belief that students can learn when concepts are explained patiently and in a way that makes sense to them.

My background in both technical subjects and history has also helped me develop strong communication and writing skills. I aim to create a relaxed, encouraging environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and learning from mistakes.

My goal is to help students strengthen their math skills, build confidence, and become independent problem-solvers.

My Teaching Approach
---------------------------
I believe that learning math should be about understanding how things work, not just memorizing formulas and procedures. My goal is to help students develop a solid foundation in math, become better problem-solvers, and gain confidence in their abilities.

As a native English-speaking American with a degree in Computer Science and 30 years of experience as a software engineer, I have spent my career using logic, breaking down complex problems, and finding solutions. I bring that same step-by-step approach to helping students understand math.

What to Expect from a Lesson
---------------------------
Every student learns at a different pace, so I adapt my approach to their needs. A typical lesson may include:

Reviewing previous material and identifying areas that need more attention.

Explaining new concepts in clear, simple language.

Working through example problems together, one step at a time.

Giving the student opportunities to solve problems independently, with guidance when needed.

Reviewing progress and identifying what to practice next.

I encourage students to ask questions and make mistakes as they learn. Understanding why a solution works is just as important as getting the correct answer.

Who My Lessons Are For
---------------------------
I focus on students who want to strengthen their math fundamentals, particularly those studying Pre-Algebra, Algebra, fractions, decimals, percentages, equations, and related topics.

Whether a student needs help catching up, wants to strengthen their foundation, or simply needs a different explanation of a difficult concept, I aim to make math more understandable and less intimidating.

My goal is not just to help students solve today's problems, but to give them the understanding and confidence to tackle new ones on their own.
