About Sam
For the last 10 years I've enjoyed a busy freelance performing and teaching career.
I took up the guitar at 13, and was very lucky in my first teacher: I continue to be inspired by his genuine love for, and joy in, music. I went on train at the Royal College of Music and Conservatorio della Svizzera Italia, and have since enjoyed an international performing career on both guitar and lute. I've performed worldwide, including at Wigmore Hall and Vienna Konzerthaus, and for TV, film, theatre and radio.
I was based in Bath for many years; on moving there, I uncovered my passion for teaching, and continue to teach at University of Bath. I'm also a deputy teacher at Guildhall's Junior Department.
Outside of music, I enjoy swing dancing, kayaking and a good book, and grapple with a mild coffee addiction.

I love music, and foremost as a teacher I want to impart this love. I have a very easygoing but expert teaching manner, and I believe that humour and a light touch are the best way to help improvement along.
Most of the lesson is spent in developing your technique and playing pieces, which is after all what we’re aiming for. I’ll try to gear most of the music around what you want to play. If you are a beginner I'll need to be more prescriptive; as you progress the choice is increasingly yours.
In each lesson we’ll look at some of the skills that go into playing music. Sight reading is quite a tricky skill to pick up, but I teach it from the very beginning, and you can expect to read new music in every lesson. I also integrate harmonic understanding into the way that we’ll learn. I’ll stress that I never teach music theory in an abstract way: I won’t make you memorise key signatures, but you’ll pick up a working knowledge of music through doing it.
My approach is to teach the fundamental skillset that allows students to go onwards in their own way: ultimately as a teacher I hope to make myself redundant.

Sam is an astonishingly brilliant and sensitive musician with an international career. Anyone who has the chance of learning with him will be lucky indeed. In addition to his technical virtuosity on guitar and lute he is, as a teacher, patient, warm, encouraging, generous and versatile in approach. He takes endless trouble to explain technique, harmony and musicality. He is an excellent and communicative authority on musicianship and musical history. His lessons are always so much more than just guitar. He manages to combine being a master and an expert with being just delightful company. He raises your confidence while giving you the feeling that he too has struggled. He makes you not only unselfconsciously aware of your own musicality but able to start to express it freely. He has the ability to change and enhance your whole relationship with music.
My son was on the verge of giving up guitar after four years and four increasingly uninspired teachers provided by the school’s music service. A musician friend suggested Sam and I was impressed by his website and teaching philosophy. It was the philosophy that pupils should always enjoy their music and feel like they’re making progress that persuaded my son to give him a go. He has never looked back!
He loves his lessons, obviously really likes Sam who, as well as all the above and the proper technique, has also taught him a wider appreciation of music and bits of music theory, organically, as things have cropped up in lessons.
My son has approved this review(!) and adds, ‘He’s a great teacher!’.Sam is an ideal tutor with his friendly and open approach. He takes great care when teaching and is passionate about his subject.
I have known Sam for 10 years first as a talented and hardworking student and in the later years as successful and prolific performer. I have no doubts that Sam, as a teacher, will inspire and pass on to his pupil his inspiration, knowledge of music and love for guitar!
