About Melissa

Hello, my name is Melissa! I am a native English speaker from London, England. I am a certified TEFL teacher and I studied English Literature at college for two years (A grade at A-Level). I have provided mentoring and tutoring services in the English language part-time for many years. In the past, I worked as a face-to-face tutor, and I also have experience teaching young children in a childcare setting. For the past 3 years, I have been tutoring both adults and children (online) on a weekly basis with extremely positive results. (At the moment I'm teaching adults ONLY) I have also been teaching as part of a voluntary educational work for over seven years. I am very patient and interested in your personal learning goals. I am not motivated by money, rather it is my privilege to help you to improve and keep progressing at the right pace for you. I am very flexible and will work hard to help you achieve your goals!

  • Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I'm a native speaker born and raised in London so English is my mother tongue. I've been fascinated with language from a young age. One of my first words was "cat-a-logue" - I loved talking from the start!
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

This is a hard one! I would have to choose someone from traditional English Literature, such as Mr Darcy or Elizabeth Bennet from Jane Austen's 'Pride & Prejudice'. I love the extensive and varied use of volabulary in her writing. To some extent, I feel the true richness and depth of the English language is not fully appreciated today.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

British people are funny. We have so many idioms, slang words and strange sayings that it would be hard for anyone to work out what we're talking about! But I love that. That's one thing you'll get as a bonus if you choose a native English speaker (from Britain), you'll get a special insight into all our little jokes and sayings!
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Although English is my mother tongue, I love that you can find people almost everywhere who can speak the language. I feel it connects us to others and gives us the ability to get to know people from many different cultures and backgrounds.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are so many rules, and so many exceptions to the rules. Mastering the English language takes time, but if you put in lots of practice and aren't afraid of making mistakes, you'll learn as you go and express yourself more confidently. Practise practise practise... speak to whoever you can, whenever you can!
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

At the moment, I am learning the Gujarati language. Let me tell you, it's not easy and completely different from any language I've tried before. In the beginning, I tried to translate everything into Gujarati, exactly as I would say it in English. That didn't work for me. I ended up with lots of complicated words I couldn't pronounce, and I didn't feel comfortable speaking. Now, I've changed my approach. I try to speak in my new language in the simplest words/terms I can think of. As a result, I feel more comfortable and I'm easily understood. Language is all about communication and while it can be frustrating when we can't express ourselves fully, simplying our language and being understood is far better than trying to sound amazing and confusing ourselves and everyone else!
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Travelling around South America taught me how other people perceive and understand the English language. I discovered certain concepts and words that people often struggled with, and learned how to communicate with others more clearly and respectfully.
  • What makes you a Superprof in language?

I am passionate about the English language and my enthusiasm keeps lessons fun and engaging. I really enjoy teaching and spending time with my students, so I will always go out of my way to help them. I also understand what it's like to be a language learner, so I recognise some of the challenges we face and I'm learning how to overcome them
