About Ryley
I am a dedicated chess player, with a strong understanding of the fundamentals needed to help beginners and intermediate players improve quickly and confidently.
I have experience helping new players identify their mistakes, simplify their thinking, and build solid habits that lead to consistent progress. My focus is not just on playing strength, but on clear communication and structured teaching, which many higher-rated players often overlook.
I take a patient, supportive approach in every lesson, ensuring students feel comfortable asking questions and learning at their own pace. My lessons are always organised, goal-focused, and adapted to each student’s level.
Whether you are completely new to chess or stuck trying to break past a rating barrier, I aim to provide practical, easy-to-understand guidance that leads to real results.

My teaching approach is simple, structured, and focused on real improvement. I specialise in helping beginner to intermediate players (0–1000 rating) understand the fundamentals of chess without confusion or unnecessary complexity.
In each lesson, we typically:
- Review one of your recent games to identify key mistakes
- Focus on one important concept (such as avoiding blunders, basic tactics, or opening principles)
- Practise with guided examples so you fully understand the idea
- Set optional exercises to help you improve between lessons
My goal is to help you stop making common mistakes and start winning more games quickly, rather than overwhelming you with advanced theory.
Lessons are usually 60 minutes, but can be adjusted depending on your preference.
I am a chess player with a strong understanding of the game at beginner and intermediate level. I focus on clear explanations and a patient teaching style, making lessons suitable for:
- Complete beginners
- Casual players stuck below 1000
- Kids or adults who want a simple, friendly introduction to chess
