About Emilie
My name is Emilie Flores, and I love math and science. In high school, I graduated as valedictorian and attended UCLA the next fall. I majored in biology and minored in art history. After graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree from UCLA, I started teaching science full time while attending graduate school. I earned my Master of Arts in urban education to improve my digital literacy skills and do research on best teaching practices. As a result, I learned how to use technology to make learning more enjoyable and effective for students. I have been a credentialed teacher for five years, and I am excited to work with you! I have always loved teaching others, and I find that sharing my passion for math and science is a little contagious. I am now studying in preparation for medical school, so I would like to continue teaching in my spare time with you.

Our first lesson is a diagnostic; we have a conversation to learn how best to fit your needs. We will start a profile on you and start to monitor your progress. The goal is for you to maximize your learning by focusing on your questions, high-yield content, and areas of potential weakness.
I plan synchronous, in person lessons. For example, this can be a typical library tutoring session for 1 hour after school or a live, zoom tutoring session.
For students who would also require “just in time” support outside of our typical meeting hours, I also prepare custom, asynchronous materials for you to use. For example, if you send me two questions you need assistance with, I will respond with a video tutorial and the answer key. For our next synchronous lesson, you can expect some more practice with this material as well to fill any gaps in understanding.
I record custom tutorial videos as needed and explain each step as I go. I also create worksheets and can assign other resources so that you can master a skill with independent practice. If you send me a PDF or section of your textbook you are struggling to understand, I turn it into handwritten notes that explain the topic in easier to digest terms. I will also go over the notes and explain the section with you via zoom.
I am advanced in my use of synchronous and asynchronous online learning methods. I am also able to create interactive materials and screenshare while I demonstrate a PHET simulation or solve a problem.
For all of our meetings, I pause and ask questions that assess for understanding as well as provide some concept check questions to keep you engaging with the material throughout each lesson. You will also have 1-2 minutes to digest what you’ve learned and mentally prepare for the next section. Every 5 lessons, we summarize and recall what was learned in the previous 5 lessons so as to not “forget” or lose standards mastery. This is a safe, positive learning environment where we celebrate your success and appreciate mistakes as evidence of learning.
