About Dedra
I started my career as a tenure-line faculty member, and successfully fulfilled the departmental goals of revamping their large-lecture introductory calculus-based physics courses. This included constructing a technology-rich active learning classroom which seats 72 students. I mentored graduate student research projects and maintained an extensive research collaboration involving frequent trips to the University of Cape Town. As part of the introductory course reform, I began mentoring faculty and leading regional faculty communities of practice. This lead to a career change for me - switching to a full time position in faculty development in Washington, DC. During this time I served on the development committee for AP Physics C, and wrote a physics book chapter for OpenStax. I received a grant from edX for the development of a MOOC to help students succeed on the AP Physics C exam. I began private tutoring in 2015, at first to raise extra money to help pay for my dog’s knee reconstruction surgery. I realized how much I missed working with students, and I thrived in the freedom tutoring afforded. I left formal academia and became a full-time tutor in June, 2015. I continue my research collaborations, freelance work, and am authoring a student workbook for introductory physics. There is so much to do and so little time but my life is filled with the joy of seeing students eyes light up with sparks of understanding.

I teach by helping students connect their ideas into strong conceptual networks. This provides students with increased confidence, recall, and retention. I believe all students can succeed in STEM education! I am patient and listen carefully to student ideas, respecting and valuing a highly interactive approach to teaching.
