About Laura
I have always preferred one-to-one teaching to lecturing. The reason is that the relationship between tutor and student matters enormously. I want to get to know the student properly — not just their academic strengths and weaknesses, but what interests them, how they think, what they find difficult, and what gives them confidence. Once a student trusts me, they are much more willing to ask questions, admit when they don't understand something, try out an idea that might be wrong, and take the intellectual risks that lead to real progress.
My 15 years as a Professor of Literature at universities including the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan, and most recently at MIT, have given me a deep knowledge of teaching English. Having been educated at independent schools in London myself (St Christopher's and North London Collegiate), I also have a particular understanding of the academic expectations and culture of the schools for which I now prepare students.
However, good tutoring is not simply a matter of passing knowledge on. It is about understanding what a particular student needs and finding the right way to help them get there. For all my academic experience, I think that building a strong relationship with students is ultimately one of my greatest strengths as an educator.

I tutor students from 7+ through to university and postgraduate level, including 11+, 13+, GCSE English Literature and Language, A-level English, and university/Oxbridge preparation.
For school admissions (7+, 11+, 13+) I have supported students applying to leading independent and selective schools including Alleyn’s, City of London, Colfe’s, Dulwich, JAGS, King’s Ely, Latymer, The Perse and St Dunstan’s, as well as grammar schools in Buckinghamshire, Leicestershire and London. My school-admissions tutoring has achieved a 100% success rate.
I have also tutored many students through GCSE English Literature and Language, as well as English A-level.
At GCSE, I put a strong emphasis on working through practice papers so that students go into their exams familiar with the questions, confident about how to approach them, and able to work under time pressure. I also work intensively on close reading — a skill at the heart of both Literature and Language — and have seen students develop remarkably sophisticated ways of reading and analysing texts, while making substantial improvements in their grades across the board.
At A-level, my focus shifts towards developing students as independent literary thinkers. My own academic research specialises in literary theory, and I particularly enjoy introducing students to different critical approaches and seeing them develop their own interpretations of a text. I also guide students through the transition to longer-form independent writing, helping them to develop and sustain an argument of their own.
For university students and Oxbridge applicants, I offer advanced support in literary analysis, academic writing, admissions preparation, and interview practice.
Lessons are online and one-to-one, and last 45 minutes. For older students and more intensive examination or A-level work, I also offer longer sessions where appropriate. My rate is £140/hour.
I also offer admissions guidance for American universities, at both undergraduate and graduate level, including university selection and application essays. These sessions are charged at £160/hour.
I do not offer a free first lesson. Before beginning lessons, however, I always speak with parents/guardians — or directly with students at university level and above — to understand their needs, discuss their goals, and make sure that we are a good fit.
