About Katherine
I worked for years as a foreign correspondent across Latin America and Spain, reporting before eventually shifting into full-time private teaching using everything that reporting work taught me. Twelve years into teaching now, I've guided approximately three hundred ten students, many of them professionals who wanted Spanish tied to real substance, not artificial classroom material. My journalism background gives me a genuinely current, well-informed perspective that shapes every single lesson, keeping content relevant rather than stale or generic. I work particularly well with students who find typical textbook material boring, since I offer something built around genuine global events and real, substantive discussion instead. My teaching style is engaged and current, treating students as genuinely intelligent adults capable of discussing real ideas, not just repeating scripted classroom phrases. I have guided numerous students toward confident, articulate Spanish, watching many develop genuine opinions and vocabulary around topics they previously felt unable to discuss at all. Students consistently tell me lessons with me feel more like genuinely interesting conversations than formal instruction, which I consider real success. I take pride in helping students engage confidently with real conversations across the Spanish-speaking world. After twelve years, I remain genuinely passionate about teaching Spanish through real substance.

I spent years reporting from overseas before moving into teaching, so my lessons are built around real news stories rather than invented textbook scenarios nobody actually encounters. Every lesson opens with a current event from across the Spanish-speaking world, which we read, discuss, and pick apart together for both language and meaning. Vocabulary comes directly from real journalism, giving students genuinely useful words for talking about politics, economics, and daily life rather than artificial classroom topics. Grammar gets taught through the actual sentences we're reading, showing students exactly how professional writers construct clear, confident Spanish in real published work. Discussion is central to every lesson, since forming and defending an opinion about a real story builds genuine, natural fluency far faster than scripted dialogue practice ever manages. I push students to summarise stories in their own words, a skill that builds both comprehension and genuine spoken confidence simultaneously in one exercise. Listening practice uses real broadcast clips from different regions, exposing students to natural pace and genuine accents rather than artificially slow textbook recordings. I keep students engaged with topics they actually care about, since forced, irrelevant material rarely produces lasting engagement in anyone I've taught. Every lesson leaves a student more informed and more fluent, at the same time.
