About Craig
I am a first class honours degree holder in engineering from a russell group University who recognises that schools teach only the bare minimum for students to pass tests and leave out the vital information as to why we learn such concept. I believe learning why we learn something helps us to not only retain what we have learned and apply it to new scenario, but also have a better relationship to education and thus approach it with a more positive attitude. How many times have you heard people say things like "y = mx + c.... When am I going to use that in real life?"... Well truth is whether we realise it or not, we use algebra in our lives every day... I want to help students understand the benefits and power of welcoming education and actually enjoying it. The way to getting a first class honour, like me, is to enjoy learning... And I believe that's achieved by first understanding why we're learning what we're learning.

When I was 16 doing my A Levels, I found that I never understood why we were being taught the concepts being taught. What was the point of learning how to differentiate an equation, for example, why are we learning this seemingly abstract concept? I was learning processes to find the right answers to questions but not understanding why we were being asked the questions in the first place, which I knew deep down was an inefficient and ineffective way of learning...so I quit. However, I found that having returned to A Levels at 22 I found that I was able to ask myself and the teachers the right questions that allowed for a deeper understanding of the why's and not just settling on the how's. Because of this, I learned how to learn... I gained confidence, received an offer from The University of Manchester to study Petroleum Engineering and achieved grades to accept it... Three years later they awarded me with a 1st class honours degree. I've been in both camps and unfortunately it took me to become my own teacher to learn, which is why i am fully convinced that its the teacher who is responsible for a student's failures, not the individual's, and so you choose me to be your tutor, you can be sure that I'll make myself accountable for your success, thus increasing the likelihood of yielding the results we both want.
