About Persephone
My name is Persephone (Persy) and I am a first-class English Literature graduate with a Master’s in Film Studies (distinction). I have studied a great range of poetry, prose and plays from different cultures and time periods, giving me fantastic breadth and depth of knowledge in language and literature.
Enthralled with Gothic novels since reading Jekyll and Hyde for my GCSEs, my undergraduate thesis explored postcolonial readings of the vampire figure across British and American literature. My post-graduate dissertation examined the relationship between food and fear in horror cinema across cultures, using an affect theory framework.
I have tutoring experience in English Language and English Literature for GCSE, AS, A-Level and university assignments.

Under my guidance, students gain a strong foundation of knowledge in literary theory, critical commentary and historical contexts. I vary my teaching methods according to each tutee's learning style, but always place a strong emphasis on trusting their own creativity to reach a well-supported argument and sophisticated textual analysis. Ultimately, my aim is for students to learn a lot and have fun!
Each of my lessons begins with a revision session of the exam board's syllabus, assessment objectives and marking criteria to guarantee students understand exactly what their markers are looking for.
Extra tips and tricks include time-management, essay structure and exam technique to reduce stress and assist students in achieving to the best of their ability. Finally, I advise students how to balance academia with extra-curricular activity to ace any school or university application.
