About Anna
I was educated at state schools in Oxford and West Oxfordshire, completing my A Levels in English Literature, Sociology and Psychology. These subjects reflected my interest in people, culture and the ways we understand the world around us, which I continued through an EPQ exploring the use of drama therapy in prison rehabilitation. I achieved A/A* grades across my sixth-form studies.
At the University of Manchester, a Russell Group university, I studied English Literature and Film Studies and achieved a First-Class degree. Throughout my studies, I particularly enjoyed exploring literature and film through social, political and psychological perspectives, and thinking about how stories reflect and shape the world around us.
I also know what it feels like to struggle with a subject. I received tutoring for Physics during secondary school, and remember how valuable it was to have someone take the time to explain things differently and give me the support to participate. I want my own students to feel comfortable asking questions, trying out ideas and finding their own voice - just like I was.
Alongside my studies, I worked in customer-facing roles and as a freelance writer for local newspapers and online publications. After graduating, I worked in content and blog writing before moving into care and support work, where I planned and coordinated creative activities and provided support for people with a range of cognitive and physical needs. I have also had experience supporting people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). During this time, I completed my Level 5 Diploma in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.
I’m comfortable working with students from a wide range of backgrounds, learning styles and levels of confidence. Whether English isn’t your first language, you find it difficult to stay focused or motivated, or you simply need more time and support to work through complex ideas, I’m happy to adapt my approach to what works for you. My experience in care work has taught me the importance of patience, flexibility and meeting people where they are.
I’ve also had the opportunity to travel and meet people from many different backgrounds. I love the way literature and film can give us a space to explore experiences far beyond our own, and I’d like to help you find that same sense of curiosity and connection in your studies.

I am available every Sunday throughout the day for lessons. My lessons take a conversational, student-led approach. We can focus on something you’re currently studying, an area you’re particularly interested in, or a topic you’d like to explore further.
I think much of the enjoyment of Literature and Film comes from finding something that speaks to you and developing confidence in your own interpretation. From there, we can take different approaches to a text and explore the questions that interest you. How might we read it from a feminist or critical perspective? How does it reflect the social and political climate in which it was created? How have later interpretations changed as society has changed?
I enjoy helping students pull apart these different layers, consider alternative interpretations and use them to develop, challenge or strengthen their own ideas. My aim is for you to leave a lesson with something of your own to say, as well as the knowledge and analytical skills to express it clearly in a class, seminar or essay.
Lessons can also include discussions, essay planning, close analysis and exam preparation, depending on what you need. I offer a free initial trial lesson so we can get to know each other, discuss your goals and work out how I can best support you.
