About Jack
I hold a first-class degree in Criminology from Durham University and a Masters in Political and Economic Sociology from Cambridge University. During my time at Durham, I served as Editor-in-Chief of the student newspaper, while my postgraduate degree at Cambridge included a 20,000-word dissertation written during the COVID lockdown.
After graduating from Durham, I worked briefly as a journalist for The Sunday Times and CityAM. Currently, I’m writing an academic journal article and, in my professional capacity, have authored white papers as a consultant for the UK government.
Growing up in the North West of England, I won an academic scholarship to a local school, and early on, I discovered the value of learning in a supportive, light-hearted, and approachable environment. This realisation has influenced my teaching style, and I make it a priority to create a relaxed but focused atmosphere in my lessons. I aim to build my students' confidence from the outset, ensuring that learning is both enjoyable and effective.

My Approach to Tutoring and Teaching Methodology
I believe that every student learns differently, so I tailor my tutoring sessions to each individual’s strengths and needs. My teaching approach focuses on creating a clear and structured learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring topics in depth. I like to break down complex theories and concepts into manageable parts and will use the first lesson to get to know how the student learns best. I encourage critical thinking and active discussion to ensure a thorough understanding of the topics at hand, rather than just memorisation. Whether it's understanding the initial material, cross-checking your homework, or getting a First in your dissertation, I'm here to help you reach your highest possible potential.
In terms of techniques, I mix interactive discussions, exercises, mock exam environments, and review sessions to help students grasp difficult concepts and retain knowledge effectively. I focus on building confidence and helping students develop independent study habits that will benefit them beyond our sessions.
Throughout my academic life, I realised I always performed my best in environments where my teachers and lecturers were supportive, light-hearted, and approachable - basically, an environment where I *want* to work. Because of this, this is something that I prioritise in my lessons, making the concept of extra help not only enjoyable but also with the aim of building academic confidence from the start.
Lesson Structure
A typical lesson lasts 60 minutes, though I’m happy to adapt this depending on the student's needs. Each session will have a clear goal, whether it's covering a specific topic, preparing for an exam, or improving writing and analytical skills. All lessons are conducted online, offering flexibility and convenience for students regardless of their location.
Qualifications and Experience
I hold a first-class undergraduate degree from Durham University in Criminology and a Masters degree from Cambridge University in Political and Economic Sociology. My academic background, combined with my experience in guiding students at GCSE, A-Level, and undergraduate levels, enables me to provide tailored support that aligns with exam boards and academic requirements.
Who the Lessons Are For
My lessons are suitable for students aged 14 and up, from GCSE to undergraduate levels. Whether you are preparing for exams, need support with coursework, or simply wish to deepen your understanding of English, Sociology, or Social Sciences, I can help you achieve your academic goals.
