About Johan
I am a British director and editor with over 15 years of filmmaking experience across short films, documentaries, and narrative work.
My journey began at the New York Film Academy in 2001, and I have worked in the film industry ever since. After an early period of filmmaking, I returned fully to directing and editing in 2016 with the comedy short The Trouble With Gurus, in which I also acted.
Since then, I have written, directed, and edited a number of award-winning short films including Online Order and Loki’s Game, both of which have screened at international film festivals.
More recently, I have focused on documentary filmmaking as both director and editor. My debut feature documentary The Banjo Boys is currently on the international festival circuit, where it has already won four awards. My second feature, The Chase, is currently in development for distribution.
Alongside my filmmaking career, I have also worked extensively in education, teaching English and Film to students of different ages and abilities. This experience has given me a strong ability to communicate creative and technical ideas clearly and practically, and it forms an important part of my approach as a filmmaking coach.
I am passionate about helping emerging filmmakers develop their storytelling, editing, and production skills, while also understanding the real-world process of making films that connect with audiences and succeed in the industry.

* I provide a comfortable, focused learning environment where students can deepen their understanding of filmmaking while building practical skills, confidence, and creative independence
* I hold a teaching qualification, which has strengthened my ability to deliver clear, engaging, and structured lessons tailored to different learning styles and goals
* I teach filmmaking to students aged 14+ from beginner to advanced level, covering directing, storytelling, editing, and the practical process of making films from concept to completion
* Each lesson is 55 minutes long and fully hands-on, built around active filmmaking practice rather than passive learning
* A typical lesson begins by identifying goals or reviewing current work, followed by a focused practical exercise such as directing a scene, analysing footage, or editing a sequence, and ends with structured feedback and clear next steps
* We learn through creating, analysing, and recreating film ideas, scenes, and exercises so students can immediately apply theory into practice
* Constructive, detailed feedback is central to every session and is designed to support continuous improvement while developing each student’s own creative voice and decision-making skills
* My approach combines creativity with real-world filmmaking practice, drawing directly from my experience as a working director and editor so students learn how films are made in the industry
* The focus is not only on technical ability, but also on storytelling instinct, confidence on set, and the ability to think like a filmmaker rather than just a student
