About Soumya
I am a visual storyteller, filmmaker and Master's graduate in Film Directing with years of experience writing in a variety of formats, from short stories to screenplays. I have approached filmmaking holistically, gaining hands-on experience across multiple areas of film production, including screenwriting, sound recording, storyboarding, assistant direction, cinematography and directing.
I believe that a great screenwriter benefits from understanding the entire filmmaking process. Knowing how a screenplay translates to the screen helps writers make informed creative decisions about elements such as costume, makeup, lighting, sound design, camera angles and music. Having worked in many different production roles, I can offer practical guidance that goes beyond the script itself and help you understand how every creative choice contributes to the final film.
I don't believe learning should feel like a chore, it should be something you genuinely look forward to. My goal is to create a supportive, engaging and enjoyable learning environment where you feel comfortable asking questions, experimenting with ideas and developing your own creative voice.
Fun fact: I'm a huge anime fan! If you are too, we can even explore storytelling techniques through anime and discuss what makes its characters, worlds and narratives so memorable!

My classes combine practical exercises with a strong foundation in screenwriting theory, ensuring students not only understand the craft but also apply it to their own projects. I believe every writer has a unique voice, so I tailor my teaching to each student's strengths while providing constructive feedback to help them improve in areas such as story structure, character development, dialogue, pacing and visual storytelling.
A typical lesson may include discussing a film or screenplay assigned as homework, brainstorming new ideas, analysing scenes, learning screenplay formatting and industry conventions, writing and editing scripts, and reviewing previous work. While every class is adapted to the student's goals, the lessons follow a structured curriculum that takes students from the fundamentals of storytelling to completing a polished screenplay.
I hold a Master's degree in Film Directing and work as a freelance filmmaker, writer and director. My experience directing actors, collaborating with film crews and developing projects from concept to screen allows me to offer practical insights alongside academic knowledge. I have also taught filmmaking workshops for children aged 6–11, which has strengthened my ability to explain complex ideas in a clear, engaging and supportive way. My aim is to create a positive learning environment where students feel confident experimenting, asking questions and developing their own creative voice.
As both a writer and director, I teach screenwriting from a filmmaker's perspective, helping students understand not only how to write a compelling script but also how it translates to the screen.
My lessons are open to anyone with an interest in filmmaking and storytelling. Whether you're writing your first short film, developing a feature screenplay, preparing for film school, or simply looking for guidance to turn an idea into a compelling script, the classes are tailored to your experience level. There is no minimum or maximum age requirement, only curiosity and a willingness to learn.
