About Bill

If you are in business or planning to be and need an experienced mentor or tutor look no further. You won't find many non-executive directors or mentors with more all round experience than I am able to offer. I have coached and mentored my successors in many businesses and acted as a mentor to several large and small businesses in my capacity as a non-executive director. For more details please see My Resources which includes as an attachment details of my current and past directorships as well as "To Whom It May Concern" references.

As a Director of many well known and/or highly profitable businesses I have gained extensive experience of applying global intelligence, obtaining multi-millions in funding, undertaking acquisitions, leading investigations and pre/post acquisition reviews, dealing with high net worth contacts, managing strategy, overseeing corporate finance initiatives and detecting malpractice and fraud.

When measured against their peers many of the businesses I have been a Director of or founded have risen to be number one in their international profitability rankings. Often referred to as a “safe pair of entrepreneurial hands”, using intelligence and experience (such as having been a Chartered Accountant for over 40 years), I have helped improve the bottom line of many a business. My business experience combined with *Faire Sans Dire’s knowhow and global contacts can prove awesome. (*Please see FaireSansDire.org.)

My business development experience combined with my legal, funding, investigative and high net worth contacts established over decades while acting both as a director of well known businesses and the CEO of Faire Sans Dire, a niche global intelligence based organisation, means that I can bring more to the table than most medium sized finance companies in conjunction with many typical business development directors and executives.

My career was founded on solid “no-nonsense” ground in the North of England with Cooper Brothers. I initially audited small and then ever larger manufacturing businesses such as British Steel and other nationalised industries. It was not long before I was noted for having an uncanny knack of uncovering that which was meant to be hidden from view. I uncovered much fraud and malpractice whether by board members, senior management, factory or sales managers. I now have a wealth of international experience in undertaking due diligence and investigations. My experience covers pre/post acquisition reviews and the pre-emption and/or detection of malpractice and fraud.

As a Director of many businesses I have had many roles whether as a Non-Executive Director, Finance Director, Operations Director, CEO/MD or Chairman. My experience covers devising, delivering and managing strategy. I also have in-depth knowledge of managing corporate finance, risk, planning, ecommerce/IT, operations/trading, legal/compliance, corporate governance, audit/control/security and all aspects of finance functions.

I have implemented many all embracing changes to complex businesses. For example, my remits have included replacing inherited accounting, management reporting, treasury and/or operational systems. Simultaneously I have transformed the areas under my responsibility to “centres of excellence”. My having established and maintained such “centres” is evidenced by my board colleagues placing me in charge of many strategic initiatives. That reflects their confidence in the robustness and quality of those “centres” under my direct control.

I have had considerable experience working with small businesses with few staff struggling for survival whilst trying to raise finance. My responsibilities have also included directing profit centres of over £250 million per annum in the 1980s/1990s, managing large numbers of staff, handling trades of over £50 billion per annum in the 1990s, co-managing assets in excess of £500 billion and controlling operations to support millions of customers in the 1980s/1990s.

I have either led or been jointly responsible for in excess of 100 corporate initiatives across over 20 countries. Such initiatives included (attempted and accomplished) acquisitions, divestments, start-ups, mergers, listings, restructurings, rights issues and liquidations etc. They ranged in size from an MBO of a business with under a dozen staff to an attempted acquisition of the Royal Bank of Scotland Group and Nationwide Building Society. I have also established many overseas businesses.

Throughout my career I have managed change. I have turned round and reorganized businesses, directed complex projects and closed down or disposed of non-strategic business elements. All of these have been achieved whilst meeting tough deadlines and/or delivering results beyond reasonable expectations.

My referees, peers and colleagues perceive me as being of impeccable integrity, a positive and energetic experienced professional with considerable financial and management skills. I am respected for my incisive perspicacity (whether strategic or in terms of detail), commercial and organisational flair, creativity, initiative and tenacity. My CV does not dwell on the quotidian. I have attended well over 5,000 board or more important business meetings. My role as a Director of a business normally encompassed more responsibilities than one might attribute to that role. For example, when acting as a Finance Director I often controlled product development, security, compliance, operations, IT, credit control etc.
