About Seth
I began tutoring in 2012 and have experience working with students one-on-one, in groups, and in the classroom. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of teaching a wide range of subjects, from elementary-level counting and arithmetic, to high school topics such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry, and even college-level subjects like linear algebra, discrete mathematics, and calculus. I graduated magna cum laude with a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, and have contributed to multiple education-focused programs, including math circles and the UW Math Olympiad. Currently, I am an active tutor at a math learning center. I believe that learning occurs most effectively when students are interested and engaged, and that understanding the "why" behind the "how" is key to this. When working with students, I not only help them through the steps of solving a problem but also aim to impart a deeper understanding of the process and how we arrive at the solution. There’s immense satisfaction in seeing a concept "click"—when a student suddenly grasps a challenging idea, and the many seemingly disparate exercises come together, becoming both approachable and enjoyable. One of my greatest joys is guiding students to these moments of realization. While I am dedicated to helping students excel academically, I also believe that learning should be enjoyable. Outside of tutoring, I am an avid player of the strategy game Go and enjoy solving math and logic puzzles. The strategic thinking and problem-solving these activities involve are passions I bring into my lessons, hoping to inspire a sense of curiosity and fun in my students. I am committed to guiding students through the exploration, understanding, and practice necessary to develop both the mechanical skills for success and a lasting appreciation for mathematics.

I believe success in mathematics comes from understanding, and the path there is unique to each person. While teaching, I favor Socratic questioning and adjusting explanatory methods based on what resonates most with the student. Together, we will identify what they need to gain confidence and proficiency in both the 'how' and the 'why' of their material. I specialize in middle and high school topics, including algebra, geometry, trigonometry, precalculus, and calculus, but have had success tutoring all ages and grade levels up to lower division undergraduate courses, along with SAT and ACT prep.
