Students don't learn simply because a teacher taught them. Learning requires a teacher to know how to diagnose and address learning gaps. Questions such as "Do you know what I mean?", "Does that make sense?" and "Any questions?" may provide an opportunity for students to respond, but they do not necessarily demonstrate genuine understanding. A student may answer "yes" to the first two questions and "no" to the third, while still having significant gaps in their knowledge or skills.
I use evidence-informed pedagogical strategies (i.e. the work of Tom Sherrington) to identify and address these gaps, ensuring students can demonstrate their understanding of both course knowledge and the skills required to apply it. From there, tutoring is tailored to help students progress from novice to proficient, or from proficient towards mastery.
A significant focus is placed on teaching students how to analyse questions carefully and respond precisely to the range of instructional verbs used in summative assessment. In particular, students are supported to understand what is required when asked to evaluate, discuss, analyse, examine and respond to other higher-order instructional terms. Knowing the content is only part of success. Knowing how to respond to the question is equally important.
I can help with:
- Academic writing: essay planning and development, sourcing and integrating contextually appropriate evidence, in-text and end-of-text referencing, spelling and grammar (in my teaching of undergraduate Education students, you would be surprised how much this is needed!)
- Question interpretation
- Understanding course specific content: philosophy, undergraduate theology (including scripture, sacraments, prayer, morality, history, social justice), Year 7 to 12 Religious Education (through a Catholic Christian lens)
- Analysis of sources: origin, context, purpose, reliability, contestability, usefulness
- Writing a research plan: research questions, focus questions, gathering of data, ethical considerations, analysis of sourced information, communication of findings
Lesson duration: 1 hour
Students: Secondary (Years 7 to 12) and Tertiary (Undergraduates)
