About Kate
I'm an experienced writer and a qualified teacher. I have professional writing experience and have self-published one novel and am working on my second. I love helping people find their voice and learn to express themselves in writing. I've always loved both literature and language. I'm fascinated by words, including etymology, and I love grammar - it's so interesting to think about how sentences work! I have lots of experience proofreading and helping with developmental edits for friends and family. I'd love to share those skills with you and help you become the best writer you can be!

My creative writing classes are tailored to individual students. For this reason, sessions could look quite different depending on your requirements. Here are some examples for how things could look:
Possibility 1: The student is already working on a novel or short story. Each week the student would send me a chapter or excerpt up to 4,000 words. I would spend time before the lesson reading through this and taking notes. During the session we would discuss the excerpt and I would make suggestions and provide the student with written feedback too. This would include developmental editing (looking at the overall plot and structure of the novel) and line edits (more detailed suggestions to improve the clarity and impact of individual sentences and paragraphs).
Possibility 2: The student has an idea for a fiction piece but has not yet begun writing. During sessions we might talk together about inspirational books, films or experiences and work on brainstorming and then planning your novel or story. Over several sessions, I would take the student through the process of developing believable original characters, a vivid setting and a satisfying plot.
Possibility 3: The student wants to start writing poetry. We might start each session by looking at a classic poem together and talking about why it works well. I would suggest a theme, form or literary device featured in this poem and we would brainstorm ideas for the student to write their own poetry. The student would then submit their writing between classes for feedback.
