About Michael
With over 15 years of experience in online music instruction, I help students break through technical barriers, perform with confidence, and succeed in auditions—from honor bands to full-ride college opportunities. My approach is highly personalized and results-driven, built around each student’s goals, skill level, and learning style.
Whether you’re a beginner building fundamentals, a comeback player getting your chops back, or an advanced student preparing for a major performance, lessons are structured to create consistent progress week to week.
I’m fully invested in my students’ success and take pride in helping them reach meaningful milestones—both musically and personally.
My grandfather was a self-taught trumpet player whose style was heavily influenced by Louis Armstrong, and his love for music inspired me to begin playing trumpet at the age of seven. By middle school, I was already teaching lessons at a local music store while continuing my own private studies.
In 2000, I made it a personal mission to take my playing to a higher level. I immersed myself in studying technique, sound production, and performance concepts—learning not only what worked, but why it worked. That journey helped shape my teaching philosophy and gave me the tools to help students progress more efficiently and confidently.
Today, my passion is helping trumpet players build strong fundamentals, develop their sound, and reach their musical goals with clear direction and purpose.
With over 27 years of experience in teaching, performing, auditioning, and studio recording, I’ve developed a strong understanding of the techniques and concepts that lead to lasting success on the trumpet.
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Trumpet Performance from Fort Lewis College and completed over 50 graduate credit hours in Trumpet Performance at New Mexico State University. I’ve also had the privilege of studying with world-renowned artists including Bobby Shew and Don Tison, whose mentorship greatly shaped my teaching philosophy and musical approach.
My goal is not only to help students play better, but to help them build confidence, develop strong fundamentals, and reach their full potential as musicians.

I begin each lesson by having the student play something of their choice so I can assess their current level, sound, and musical approach. We then discuss their goals and the areas they would like to improve.
Early on, I introduce what I call the “Big Three”: Air, Aperture, and Embouchure — the core fundamentals of sound production and trumpet health. Building these correctly creates a strong foundation for tone, range, endurance, and consistency.
Whether working with beginners, comeback players, or advanced students, this approach helps develop a fuller, healthier sound and lasting playing habits.
I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages and backgrounds—from 3rd graders just picking up the trumpet to players in their 70s rediscovering their passion for music.
My teaching experience includes:

Lessons are taught online through Google Meet, FaceTime, or another platform if requested.

Yes. A free or discounted introductory lesson may be available to ensure a good fit for both student and teacher.
8. How do payments work?
Lessons may be paid per session or monthly through Square, PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, or similar payment methods.
9. What is the cancellation policy?

Perfect! I have been taking weekly online flugelhorn lessons with Michael since August 2025, and he has been excellent. I came back to brass playing after a 30+ year hiatus and decided to focus exclusively on flugelhorn this time around. Michael teaches both trumpet and flugelhorn, which matters because flugelhorn instruction at this level is genuinely hard to find, and it's a very different instrument from the trumpet in terms of how you approach and play it.
I play for enjoyment. I listen to a lot of jazz trumpet and flugelhorn, and I want what comes out of the bell to sound like something I actually want to hear. Michael built the lesson plan around that. He tailored exercises specifically to develop my tone and upper range, not so I can hit a double high C, but so my tone stays consistent, dark, and fluffy when I'm above the staff.
What separates him from other instructors is his diagnostic ability. My tone was getting thin as I moved up the staff. I came to a lesson with a list of things I had been trying to fix, some of which had merit. Michael listened, asked the right questions, and identified the root cause as my embouchure. We are now working on that. A less experienced teacher would have layered more exercises on top of the symptom and missed the underlying problem.
He is patient, technical, and clear. The online format has been great. If you are looking for thoughtful, personalized instruction on trumpet or flugelhorn, I recommend him without reservation.Perfect! Mr Murphy helped my son with emergency, last minute lessons to prepare for college auditions. They've continued the relationship into college. My son really likes him and sees the value in his teachings.
