I typically try to get to know the student first. Establishing a connection by having some kind of common interest or goal is a huge plus because it allows for a smoother transition into playing and gives me something to connect to music. Comparing issues on the horn to issues that could occur in one of the students other hobbies allows for a deeper understanding of what I tell him/her.
Think about your level on the horn and find a teacher at an appropriate level to give you sound advice but will not speak over your head. Look for someone you can connect with, and take a lesson with them. If that lesson goes well, continue weekly lessons with that person.

Mr. Rickey is the best. My son was a complete beginner when we started. Rickey really meets the student where they are. He is very positive and encouraging. He gives small assignments that he can work on between times. He is also so easy to work with when schedules become hectic. Strongly recommend.
