About Stefan

Several people come to me to learn a wedding dance due to my 12 years of experience as a choreographer and due to my in depth experience in the art of Argentine Tango since 2004.

Many other people come to me to learn a connecting, non-superficial way of dancing with other people or their partner, because my approach to teaching and dancing addresses the whole human being on every level.

You'll learn about how Argentine Tango is able to enrich your life. My goal for you is that you learn as fast and as calm as you can handle it.

Most people learn fastest when they get a chance to feel the dance from the inside, from someone who knows how to use their body in this way. That is kinesthetic learning, through touch.

We'll also use video so you can see yoruself and your progress;

You'll have a lot of input on how you want to learn and how fast you want to progress.

Most people enjoy learning tango because it is an opportunity to feel one's own body; to get to know it, what it likes, how it learns, why it likes to move.

You get introduced to this dance not only as a physical activity that can lead to increased fitness - though that is for some people a welcomed side effect - but mostly as a practice that concentrates the mind, the body, the emotions, the spirit.

This concentration is a surprizing side effect for most people and it turns out to be the aspect they most cherish and appreciate.

This kind of concentration tames the incessant tendency to think without interruption. Many people who say "I can't sit still, I can't meditate" find this discipline to be effective.

And, of course, there is the other person. Getting to know another person, or deepen your knowledge of your partner of choice, which is the thrill of this dance for thousands of people.

Women and men discover the joys of their archetypical roles.

By exploring and learning the other person's role you learn the whole language of tango.

This leads to a new and deep ability to feel empathy for the person you connect with.

The man learns to lead by following, and by understanding what it really means to follow. How else could you possibly learn to lead with empathy?

A woman learns the fundamental ins and outs of of leading. How else could you follow with empathy and empowerment?

Additionally, many people stumble across these questions in the process:

What does it mean to become One with another being?

What does it mean to fuse one's nervous system with the other person's until the boundary of you and you dissolves?

Is it possible to experience being one being with another human being?

You might find out for yourself. I know it is, and most of my students get to experience exactly that besides the obvoius joys of this form of connection through dance.

Most I enjoy seeing that "aha moment" in people's eyes and in their bodies when they find that particular, unique and unmistakeable way of connecting in their own body and connecting with their partner's body.

I am naturally curious and am interested to work with people who are curious, and I like when people become more curious if they are not yet.

My role is to remove all that is superfluous, all that interferes with the freedom of your bodie's movements.

All that interferes are thoughts and habits of viewing oneself and the people and the world we live in in particular ways.

When a person who learns from me finds those points of liberation, it is palpable; we both know it - there is no way to pretend. The body does not lie.

The body is craving honest connection to itslef and to the world and the people it lives in.

The body is aching for freedom. I enjoy most the glimpses when that freedom moves in.

I enjoy a lot when someone is persistent. If someone likes to dive deep and is able to listen, be patient. And I enjoy to show someone how to listen and to be patient.

I enjoy working with people who have goals - like for example I like working on a wedding dance for a couple who is planning ahead and starts 4 - 5 months before the wedding.

I also relish when someone really wants to learn this craft so to find a new and rewarding social life that is not alcohol and drugs based, but rooted in sobriety and alertness in presence.

Looking forward to accompany you for a while in your eagerness to learn.

Stefan Fabry

25 years ago started teaching Contact Improvisation.

In 2006 started teaching Argentine Tango with my parnter Mitra Martin.

Started because we saw a great lack of systemic and effective teaching methods in the social dance community. It was a painful experience to see so many people start dancing tango and drop out because teaching skills were not available to tango teachers at that time in around 2004/2005

This intrugued both my partner Mitra and myself and we felt it is a worthy challenge to change that.

That's why we both started researching effective learning techniques, and how they apply to tango learning. We found a great wealth of possibilities that are expressed in both of our teaching and in the tango school we co-founded in 2009, Oxygen Tango in Culver City

Almost three decades of training in body awareness through the medium of dance. 15 years of modern and contemporary dance and 12 years of choreography apprenticeship with Rudy Perez.

Strong bend towards improvisation, as in Contact Improvisation.

Study of Argentine Tango since 2004 with devotion and researcher mentality, and main interest in the improvisation aspects of the dance, as well as choreography for events.

Study of mental disciplines for around 30 years in various schools of thought, Eastern Philosopies, meditation and Native American Knowledge.

Intense study and application of non-violent communication, as propagated by Marshall Rosenberg, since 2013

First I'd want to find out from you:

What experience you have with moving your body?

What draws you to tango specifically?

What might be a worthwhile goal for you?

What would be your ideal outcome?

From there we create a pathway for you to get where you want to get in tango, and for a strategy to keep you on the path with maximum enjoyment.

Students who:

- seek to find a social activity that facilitates in person interaction

- couples who want to create a wedding dance

- shy people who need to learn a means of communication with the body

- people who seek more confidence

- extroverted people who love socializing and connecting

- couples who want to find a new and intimate way to learn about each other

- people from ages 9 to ages 82

- people of all races, ethnicities, genders, religions

Advise is very intricate since we are all so different and that is beautiful in itself. There is a teacher for everyone who wants to learn. You come to the dance with a certain personality and a certain particular history which will dictate what you are looking for.

Here may be some helpful points in your search and decision making.

When I started, teachers in tango didn't know how to actually teach. It was all about imitating movements.

Teachers at that time didn't know about how to teach fundamental techniques, ethical and historical values and contexts that fuel the dance, about what to look for in the music, and maybe most importantly the abitlity to improvise on the spot, just to mention a few dimensions.

Look for teachers who teach those elements besides the "moves"

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do you feel attracted to this dance of Argentinge Tango?

What is a positive learning experience for you?

How skilled would you like to get at dancing tango?

How much time are you willing to give yourself to learn? Like with everything that is worth your time and attention in this life, the more time you put in the more rewarding the activity.

How many hours per week do you want to dedicate?

What is your monthly budget?
