About Hector
I am a native Spanish speaker with more than 10 years of experience teaching in higher education and after school programs. My background is in Comparative Literature and Writing (English and Spanish). I've worked with students of different ages, diverse bakgrounds, and various levels of learning Spanish and English.
My approach to teaching languages is direct with practical lessons in conversation and writing based on the student's needs and wants. I costumize the lessons for every student using new methods of learning grammar, pronunciation, and communication. I enjoy working with students of all ages and from different parts of the world. Whether you are in business, the arts, or just simple for the fun of learning a new language, I can help you achieve a good command of Spanish in a short period of time.
I started teaching while I was in undergraduate school. The Dean of the Humanities in my school selected students that were excelling in their work and were invited to serve as teaching assistants. I was one of the selected students. Since then I've been teaching and enjoying the profession.

My process for working with new student is:
1. Interview with student to determine level of language.
2. In the interview, get to know the student's needs and wants.
3. Determine a costumized approach for the lessons. Lesson planning.
4. Establish a schedule: Hours per week, number of weeks.
I have worked with students of various ages: from children to older adults, and from diverse backgrounds from business to arts, and from introduction to the language to creative writing and literature.
There are many people who may speak the language, but not necessarily know about grammar, syntax, and correct pronunciation. Make sure you get someone who is not only able to speak but also to write and know the intricacies of the culture.
Spanish is diverse as so are the peoples and cultures of Spanish America, however there is a standard Spanish that despite the various coloquialism in the language, it is used properly in most countries.
I'm fortunate to have lived in Spain and in various countries in Latin America to know the idioms and expressions of various regions. That is a plus when looking to hire someone who is well versed in a language such as Spanish.
Before the world entered into lockdown, my favorite event / program was the Bilingual Poetry Readings (Spanish / English) at the Bowery in Manhattan, New York City. I participate in a couple of them in the Open Mic sessions. I read my own bilingual poetry.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some of the questions are:
- Why do I want to learn the language ?
- How commited am I to learning the language ?
- Is it for pleasure, work, school, or obligation ?
- Do I have the time to dedicate to the learning process ?
- What are my goals in a month, 2 months, 6 months or a year?
- Do I need to focus on conversation or writing ? Or both ?
