About Garland Ray
A Bachelor of Music in Jazz Voice from Montclair State University & 10 years of professional performance experience later, I am no stranger to the skill & versatility required to thrive in a multifaceted & competitive industry. My career spans international stages & a variety of genres including jazz, pop/rock, choral, a cappella, musical theatre, & many others.
With passion, patience, discipline, & detail at the heart of my approach, I have collected tools through my successes & my failures that I wish to share with those who desire to grow. We will strengthen technique, develop musicality, nuance storytelling, & build confidence through exercises, emotional exploration, & owning our individuality. It is my goal that each student discovers their fullest potential while deepening their love for themselves and their art.
I get so much enjoyment from witnessing students' breakthrough moments. They arrive and you can see the student’s joy and excitement and sometimes surprise at experiencing just how capable they are. And what usually follows these breakthrough moments never ceases to amaze and inspire me. To see students begin approaching former challenges with a new fully embodied confidence, and singing with this unapologetic expansiveness is such a gift. That’s what it’s all about it.
I got started teaching when I was a Production Vocalist for Celebrity Cruises. I was the Vocal Captain and we had a new singer arrive in need of learning different voice parts for several different shows. A Vocal Director from the production studio was unavailable so I stepped in and prepard them accordingly. From that expereince it was brought to my attention the skill & enjoyment I had for coaching.
I hold my Bachelor of Muisc in Jazz Voice from Montclair State University and I have 10 years of professional performance experience as a singer.

Starting with a new student I like to begin with conversation to develop a clear understanding about their overall vocal challenges, long term & or short term goals & their genres of interest. From there, I like to explore their voice and get a sense for their range, tone, agility, breath, placement, and overall musicality. Then with the students goals as the destination, we will start the process of making adjustments to breath, placement, vowels, and other areas as necessary, to accomplish these goals.
I have worked with students of all different genres, expereince levels, and each with various end goals. They include dancers looking to strengthen their voices for more versatility in the entertainment industry, to musical theatre veterans looking for a keen ear to perfect a piece for an upcoming performance, and everything in between.
I would advise that the student find a teacher who is truly committed to attuning to their voice, their needs, & their goals. Each voice is special & unique like the individual it belongs to and therefore each should be approached with specific individualized care.

Garland is an EXCELLENT voice coach. Right away, he makes you feel completely relaxed and comfortable. He starts off with some simple warmups so you both can get a feel for where your voice is at for the lesson. When you are having issues with certain vowels and the "tough" notes, he is right there to help you figure out the healthy, and best way to sing it. I left my lesson on such a high! Garland truly helped me with a specific song I was working on and I can't wait to take another lesson with him. Do yourself a favor, and sign up with Garland!
As a female singer and Garland being a male singer, we both knew there may be challenges of discovering and evolving my voice; however, Garland ALWAYS knew what to say and how to arrange my voice to fit what was best for me. He was always willing to even try out new techniques on his own voice to exemplify and help me understand to further knowledge. He’s constantly looking for new ways to improve and meet the needs of his clients and I absolutely adore his passion for what he does. Highly recommend this passionate, caring, talented, AND professional Voice Coach!
Garland’s first hand experience as a seasoned singer and actor has taken my voice and technique to the next level. He has been able to give critiques backed by musical knowledge and can break harder things down for me in a way that is easily understandable. My times with him are so comfortable and fun!
