About Kate
I am a certified English Language Arts teacher for grades 6 - 12. I have taught English Language Arts for the past 11 years and am well acquainted with the Virginia Standards of Learning. In addition to being a teacher, I also write English Language Arts curriculum for my school district, so I have a solid understanding of the literacy skills students need as they progress through secondary school.
I also hold a Master's degree in special education for students with learning disabilities who access the general education curriculum. I am up-to-date on learning strategies for students with dyslexia.
Outside of my full-time teaching job I have tutored students ranging from 3rd to 11th grade, so I do have an understanding of the different literacy needs of students across the K-12 spectrum.
I love seeing students become more confident in their reading and writing skills, and as a result, in themselves as life-long learners.
Reading is one of my greatest loves. There's nothing like a reluctant reader finishing his or her first chapter book or finding a book series they love.

Perfect! My kids loved Katie and her creative lesson plans made lessons seem like play and something to look forward to. Despite being in virtual school (and not really participating much), my youngest learned to read that year and I attribute much of that to Katie's work!
