About Larry
I am a concert pianist, have won many competitions....state, national and international..and have played as soloist with orchestra on numerous occasions.....I have been to the Juilliard School of Music in New York, and have played many concerts across the nation, including a personal concert for the late former Prime Minister of England, Margaret Thatcher....I have also played at Carnegie Hall in New York..(Issac Stern Auditorium)....My teaching emphasis is on the Literature, Theory, Technique, and some history mixed in along the way....I have taught professionally for 49 years, both at college and privately. I teach all ages, beginning to very advanced.
I have to say, I feel very blessed to do the work I do....I love my students, and I very much enjoy helping them to accomplish fine playing skills and to share with me, the love of great music. In my opinion, nothing can satisfy the soul like music can.....and the only thing greater than listening to great music, is to play it yourself....my students often send me notes of thanks for helping to shape and change their life with the musical experiences I give them....I am grateful to be a pianist, and plan to do so for the rest of my life....Why wouldn't I??? It is the single greatest thing to do I can imagine!!!
When I was 13 years old, I had just finished winning a state competiton with the Mendelssohn g minor Concerto, allowing me to play with the Phoenix Youth Symphony....I had very fine training up to that point, and decided to try teaching some local neighbor children who I knew...it went quite well, and I enjoyed it very much....I have taught piano ever since that time.
I have studied the piano and music since the age of 3 years old....I have a Masters Degree in Piano Performance, and have taught since the age of 13....though I have instructed at the college level, I much prefer teaching privately in my own studio, which has a beautiful 7 fool Mason and Hamlin grand piano in it

I talk with the student about their past experience (if any), and discuss their personal musical goals....then I ask them to play for me, and I evaluate their reading skills, their technical proficiency, and their general knowledge of musical terms, and terminology....After that process, I have a very good idea about the direction I want to lead the student in.
Many...very young, very old....beginners, and advanced players of all ages and experience levels....I enjoy working with all of them.
Make sure your ask questions.....it is amazing to me how few people ask about my backround....this is hugely important....who you study with shapes your whole musical experience and life in a very specific way....make sure the person you want as a teacher has an adequate backround....playing the piano very well is a complex and difficult thing to achieve....there are so many areas of the technique or interpretation for instance, that need the guiding hand of a fine and well studied and practiced instructor. Anything less than that will be a large waste of money and time....and the end result will be far less than satisfying. And here is my final advice...if you DO find a wonderful teacher, trust them!!! You have to trust a great teacher....I always did....my teachers were all first class, and world class concert artists....and I always did exactly what they told me....never went wrong with that advice.
I was very excited to play at Carnegie Hall.....particularly because my father and family were there....my mother had already passed away.....my father told me that it was the greatest moment in his life....the least I could do for him, afterall, since he sat and waited for me to have my lesson each week for years....I am very glad I could give that to him.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should contemplate their end goals....do you want to ultimately major in music, or do you want to play for the sheer enjoyment and knowledge of it?? Either way, I treat every student with the respect they deserve, but also give them the opportunity to become the finest musician than can possibly become....in many cases, some of my students have pursued music as a life long career....good choice, in my humble opinion!!!
