About Michael
After study with local teachers here in the Pittsburgh area, my formal college education began as a scholarship student at the Juilliard School of Music and winner of the Ezarman Drake Award upon graduation. I went on to earn a Masters Degree in Musicology at Catholic University of America and a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Piano Performance from West Virginia University as a graduate assistant. As a special student at the Peabody Conservatory, I was honored to be a student of Leon Fleisher, the famous pupil of the legendary master teacher Arthur Schnabel. Thereupon, followed several years of teaching and eventually tenures of administration of departments of music and programs in the arts at various colleges and universities including Marshall University, Arizona State University and Duke University.
Regardless of age level or skill level, all my students receive an integrated lesson comprised of technique, theory, repertoire and performance practice, which are the essential ingredients for continued growth and mastery in the art of music. are essential whether the student intends to pursue continuing study toward professional goals or is simply seeking personal growth and enjoyment. I am dedicated to support and encourage both of these personal goals of music study. When appropriate, students are invited to participate in group classes where the collegiality of the moment provides support, encouragement, shared values and communication among students. As with the private lessons, these events are available for all levels of development or personal goals.

Dr. Cerveris is a master teacher and performer, especially gifted as an interpreter of Chopin's nuance, Satie's humour, Schumann's range of moods, and Debussy's imagery. His teaching stems from that rare combination of proficiency and sensitivity that is difficult to find in a solo artist. For the serious student of classical literature, the seasoned performer needing to hone a program, or the budding musician preparing for college auditions, you will benefit immensely from the expert tutelage of Dr. Michael Cerveris.
