About Rebecca
Hi!
My name is Becca and I am pleased to meet you. I love music. I love making music, writing music, and teaching music. I first began my musical journey when I was seven years old by learning to play piano on my great grandma's piano. From there, I went on to compete in a number of competitions in Middle School and Highschool. I trained professionally through George Fox University and gratuated in 2010 with a Bachellor's of Arts in Music Theory and Composition.
I have been teaching piano in various capacities since 2003 and have found a passion for working with beginning students. I have experience teaching students as young as five all the way through adult students. I believe music should be fun, especially at early learning stages, so I use games, stories, rhymes, and other resources to help teach concepts.
I also employ a low stress system of teaching. We work at your pace. If you can't practice during a specific week because your schedule was too much, we practice together in the lesson. If you were really excited and mastered a song by the next lesson, we celebrate your achievement and continue the learning process. I do not use practice sheets or guilt to motivate. I do use encouragement, constructive feedback, and (sometimes) stickers.

I love working with beginning students of all types to find their love of music. I have helped students learn chords, theory, classical pieces, contemporary pieces, and more. I believe that music is a gift and as such should be fun and inviting. My students love to show off their piano skills to friends and family and feel proud of their accomplishments.
My mom was a piano teacher and I picked up a number of her students after she had a car accident that made playing the piano difficult. I found that I really loved teaching students and seeing the way they came to enjoy music through my instruction.
I have a Bachellors of Arts in Music Theory and Composition from George Fox University.
I also have personally taken 15+ years of piano lessons.

About the lesson

The very first lesson, we sit down and discuss musical preferences and goals. I then evaluate how much a student already knows. This is a no-stress evaluation intended only to assess the student's level.
The very next level is where the fun truly begins. When we meet again, I will have worked out a lesson plan tailored to the student. I take a hands on approach to learning concepts that utilizes the student's learning style. Depending on the student, we migh play games, color pictures, write music, or solve puzzles. The piano lesson itself involves playing the piano, learning music theory and how to read music, and technique.
Best of all, we go at the student's pace. I do not scold or shame my students. I do encourage to promote growth and praise good work. These lessons are intended to be fun and promote a love of music.
I have worked with all ages (starting at 5 years old).
Take time to think about what your goals are. Do you want to play for church, learn jazz, compose music, accompany a singer, or just play for fun? Maybe you have something else in mind? Once you know what you want to do, find a teacher who can help you achieve your goals. Every teacher has their own strengths and weaknesses. Some are better in one area than another.
Additionally, find a teacher you really jive with. Music is a gift, you shouldn't dread going to lessons.
Finally, if you are a parent looking for your child, find a teacher with experience teaching children with your child's age and abilities. Choose a teacher that isn't going to expect something from your child that they cannot physically or mentally do. A five year old is probably not going to practice 30 minutes every day. To expect that is setting the child up for failure and a dislike of music. There are plenty of ways to teach beginning piano lessons without tears and stress.

Details
I typically teach 30 minutes lessons for beginning students with the option to go up to 45 minutes and 60 minutes as the student progresses and the extra time becomes more necessary.
Paying weekly:
$30 a lesson - 30 minutes
Paying Monthly (due on first lesson of the month):
$90 - (for 4 lessons)
If I need to drive to your house to teach you, I charge an additional $10 a month for gas. If you come to me, that charge is waived.
You will also be responsible for books/music. Books usually cost between $6 and $10. I will give my suggestions for books and you can either buy them on your own or have me purchase them and reimburse me for the cost of the books.
At this time, I do not do Zoom lessons or Phone Lessons
