About Joey
My goal is to help my students create music rather than to just play the piano. Proper technique and note reading are important components, but when a student learns to interpret what's on the page, beautiful music can be created.
I love it when my students "get it". Whether it's a new concept, a difficult passage, or memorizing a piece of music, their accomplishments bring me joy as a teacher.
With younger children, it's important to keep the lesson interesting moving at a good pace. I incorporate rhythm, note and theory games to help keep them focused. Older students and adults have different needs based on their goals. It's important that I understand their goals so that we are working together for the same purpose.
I have worked with adults and children as young as five. If I have a favorite type of student, its one who wants to learn. To have a natural ability is a wonderful gift, but if I had to choose one or the other for my students, I would choose the love of learning.
