About Blake
As a former elementary and high school certified teacher and current research scientist at Columbia University, one of my most valued passions involves helping students fundamentally understand science so that their success will extend beyond acing a class or exam.
Nothing makes me happier than being able to help a student move past an academic obstacle and feel proud of him-/herself. Learning is an achievement that lasts a lifetime, not just for an exam. While good grades and test scores are always a plus, being able to understand what you are learning is quite empowering and I enjoy being able to be a part of that experience!
I have always loved working with students and teaching, which prompted me to begin my official tutoring in California in 2016.
I was a student TA in a biology course during my time as an undergraduate student at The University of Georgia. I then worked for Compass Tutoring in San Francisco, CA for 2 years and had great success with my students before moving back home for personal reasons. Following the move, I taught 5th grade math and high school physical science as a certified teacher in Georgia.

I like to take about 20 minutes or so simply talking with a new student, building a rapport and getting to know one another - I believe that success in tutoring highly depends on a student's ability to feel comfortable with the tutor. I then go over diagnostic mini exams to get a better feel for where the student is in his/her understanding of the material. Then, we make a collective game plan and take things step by step.
I have taught students ranging from those making straight As and wanting that little extra help to achieve top scores on standardized tests, to students with severe learning disabilities and/or attention disorders. My sessions are judgement-free and I pride myself in being able to adapt to each individual's learning style.
It is absolutely crucial to be able to feel comfortable with your tutor - learning is a vulnerable process!
I recently published a review article in a medical journal on the effects of high-fat diets on arrhythmias - my first publication as a first author!

While thinking ahead is always a great idea, sometimes it takes being questioned or talking one-on-one to really understand where you need help. Asking questions is always encouraged!

Details
I charge $60 per hour and recommend 1.5 hour sessions for maximum benefit. Unlike bigger tutoring companies, I am flexible to any learning style and never require a commitment up front.
