About John
I make learning about photography easy and fun. I teach beginners concepts rather than highly technical methodology, which tends to confuse the student.
My classes are progressive in that we start with the camera manual and ultimately the student will be able to look at any photo and describe the exposure controls used to capture that image. Learning on location is another popular feature of my classes. I find students interact more with their camera in hand and I am with them answering questions and guiding the process.
You have a choice with me. Because people have busy lives, I offer my course for individuals online at their pace, in a group on location or one on one on location. The beauty of a group is the interaction amongst the students sharing images and ideas in addition to the instruction. Online or one on one individual instruction allows the student to work with their own timeline and schedule.
People. I photograph more people than landscapes. I love the human element. Studying faces, details, color, textures and old and young gives me a unique perspective on life and nature. And the teaching experience has always intersted me. I love to see how a student of photography progresses and ultimately gains confidence in their photo work. I feel good knowing I had a part in making them better shooters.
For a dozen years I worked as a Contract Photographer for Kodak. In this capacity I traveled the world capturing lifestyle photos and gained a unique perspective on other cultures and customs. I find that instantly sharing a digital image opens many doors, crosses many bridges and greatly enhances the photographic experience.
I was the president of the Camera Club of Brevard from 2016-2019 and take pleasure in having guided this active organization of 235 members. We all learn from one another with our shared interest in capturing images.
I realize every new student has a different agenda and approach, not to mention a rather complicated digital capture device to deal with. My individual attention and sensitivity to each persons' goals allows me to tailor my instruction to the students' needs.
Let's do this!
Over the years I was positively influenced by several creative individuals. Working with people of all skill levels appeals to me because I feel as if I am giving back what so many others have taught me. When I see the light turn on inside the student I feel I have accomplished my goal. The beauty of photography is that you have the ability to see and to share instant results.

Start with the basics and progress through exposure controls, composition, and lighting. I like to work in groups and it is less expensive for the students. Mine is a 6 week course; each of the 6 lessons involves some easy assignments which I help the students with on location. There is no classroom instruction, but each week after class on location the students send in their assignments and I comment on them via a group email to the class.
I also schedule 3 hour individual sessions for students who do not have the time to commit to a series of classes. These have proven very popular.
I have had students of all ages and skill levels from age 12 to 80. One is never too young nor too old to learn. I am particularly pleased to have had several teens. They have so many other opportunities filling their schedules and when they want to make an extra effort to increase their knowledge, in this case, photography, then I will do all I can for them. Adult students are equally great because they are grasping new technology with their interest in nature. Plus, theye bring all kinds of other experience into the process.
Make the effort to have a conversation with the teacher through email if possible. You need to sense there is a willingness to achieve your particular goals and that the teacher and the class fits your specific needs. Go with your gut feeling.
How about getting up in the morning and realizing I'm still here?
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Ask about their photo experience...in detail.
2. Ask about their teaching experience and ask for references if possible.
3. Outline your goals and make sure the teacher understands.
4. Ask about how much personal attention you will receive.
5. Ask how you will receive feedback on your photos.

Foto.101 was a remarkable learning experience. The course challenges you to learn the foundations for good photography methods and lets you apply what you learn in the form of interesting photo assignments. I thoroughly enjoyed all the assignments and reviews of the assignments by master photographer Mr. John Buck.
I was impressed with the caliber of FOTO.101 and noticed great improvement in not only my skills but my confidence! It was a fantastic experience for me and I will eagerly use what I have learned in Europe next month. John covered camera theory which gave me a knowledge of my camera I did not have before I started. Although the first lesson on reading my manual cover to cover seemed daunting, it was really a very valuable exercise that I thoroughly enjoyed. Cameras are really amazing things and there are so many ways to be creative using the different settings. Although I did not normally shoot in auto mode, it’s great to have the understanding to know what I am doing and some level of confidence and speed when I think about shooting something. The lesson on lenses and filters gave me an understanding of what the various equipment does so I now know what I want to buy and why. I learn best through practical application and found the examples and explanations were easy to understand. I was self taught before I started the course and felt alot more prepared for anything afterwards. It is great to understand my camera, fstops and shutter speeds and the various facets of lighting and composition.John is an incredibly patient and talented individual. I recommend this course for any novice, or self taught enthusiast!
If you want to learn how to use those manual settings on your camera and some helpful hints on how to create dynamic compositions in your photographs, then this is the class for you.
FOTO 101 covers the basics for beginners and is a great refresher for those who are a bit "rusty." John is very knowledgeable, patient, and his shared photography experiences are inspiring.John's class in Basic Digital Photography is perfect for anyone who wants to learn the rudiments of taking photos using a digital camera. He also delves briefly into how to manipulate the photos using Photoshop Elements. AND it the perfect venue for ANYONE who wants to brush up on digital photo techniques. There is so much more to be learned -- I want to take it again!
