About Elizabeth
Hello there! I am Elizabeth, and I am a music teacher. I have a bachelors and masters degree in music. My education afforded me the opportunity to study all aspects of music, and my learning experience has transformed my understanding of music’s place and purpose.
MY STORY
I started playing music by ear around the age of 12. During this time, it was difficult for me to express what I was hearing in my head and play it exactly how I was hearing it. Sometimes, I would get a melody in my head and struggle to find the right sounds (chords) to support it, and then I would end up creating a whole different sound than what I had in mind originally. Honestly, it was a bit frustrating. Then, I went to school to learn the scientific formulas for creating music lol!
Learning music theory made everything make sense for me. Now, I was able to create in reality what I was hearing in my imagination. Music theory helps you figure out what sounds good faster and helps you remember the beautiful sounds you heard before, so you can create them again.
Learning music theory also allows you to communicate with other musicians in a common language. Think of it this way, there are many different languages spoken in the world today. It is difficult for people to communicate if they don’t speak the same language. Music theory is the shared language that musicians use to communicate.
That being said, I teach music theory in a way that is simple and easy to understand. Anyone can learn music theory.
I have found that I get the most joy and have tremendous impact when I use my gifts and abilities to help others. Music theory is the language of music. It explains what we hear in music and why it is pleasing to the ear. I enjoy teaching music theory, because with music theory my students are able to better understand and appreciate the music they like.
