About Roy
I am a career changing Pre-Med Postbaccalaureate currently in the application process for medical school. I originally majored in TV/Film production in college, and have held a variety of jobs working in production at MTV and then for a variety of tech startups.
A few years ago I decided to transition to medicine, and am passionate about helping other career changers overcome the obstacles and hardships involved with the process. I am currently building out video tutorials and advice content on Postbaccs.com geared towards these career changers, who very often encounter a bit of "culture shock" at the pace and difficulty of Pre-Med classes.
The reading sections on standardized tests have always been my strong suit; science sections not so much! While I can answer a question here and there about the other sections on the MCAT, my main speciality is the Critical Reading Section.
During the 2020 testing year, I achieved a score of 130 on the CARS section, a 98th percentile ranking. The CARS section on the MCAT is a unique beast; it's the only section that has no content to study. It requires a ton of practice to understand the AAMC's logic and approach to these types of questions. Excelling in this section also requires a candidate who's had a voracious appetite for reading, whether news articles or novels. While this is a skill that can't be taught, I believe anyone can still improve their critical reasoning skills by readjusting their approach to this section.
My personal approach that worked for me was not to make things harder, but to drastically simplify everything. In my work with you, we will go through drills on simplifying all kinds of literary material, from the official AAMC material, to everyday reading. Very often people are held back in this section because they are overthinking things- my approach will help you overcome this tendency and instead focus on how you can simplify the passage in front of you.
