About Raquel

At first, I struggled through grade school at mathematics; it didn't come as naturally to me as my other classes and I needed to dedicate more time than other students for my grade. Through my work, though, I developed such a love and appreciation for the process of figuring out equations and learning how numbers played a role in my life every day. I now tutor middle and high school students who share the feelings I had initially in math; helping them receive the gratification of completing a problem is so rewarding to me.

I was hired by my institution and tutored for two years at the college level while I attended the Virginia Military Institute. Since the pandemic, I have helped middle and high school students in basic math, algebra, and geometry.

I feel that my services are different because I understand what it means to hate math, truly. My growth and progress in the subject, I believe, provided me with patience, understanding, and thoughtfulness that I wouldn't otherwise have had I been talented from the get-go.

I tutor online and in-person and will travel to you or another location. We can work something out! :)

I especially enjoy teaching students who would compare math to a foreign language. Before it clicked for me, I had always shared the complaint that math would never become useful in the real world. Once I began to take my time to understand how to solve the problem and not simply memorizing equations, my indifference was replaced with gratification for the subject. Traditionally, not enough attention is given to students on how to approach an equation, more emphasis is given solely on providing a diagram or solution. As someone who started out this way, helping students feel confident in problem-solving and understanding their class, as opposed to just getting through it, is my favorite aspect of tutoring.
