About Ethan

Math is my first love, and I want to show others the beauty of math!

I know lots of students struggle with math because they don't know what it is for, or what fun math is. Let me show you how fun and amazing it is!

I have such a long experience teaching math! More than 10 years, from preschool kids to college students!

I taught mostly Korean students, but I just started to teach American highschoolers/middleschoolers this year!-One student's mother said it was the first time she didn't cry after math class, and she frequently asks to do a class :)

I never only say "memorize this" and move on. I always try to show why it's like that and make it easy and interesting. By the way, I'm not just a funny math teacher. I started calculus when I was in kindergarten, finished highschool math before middle school, then taught myself college level math. I'm a certified student by many math competitions.

There can be some people better than me in math here, but I'm sure that I'll be the most passionate teacher! I always think about the students and math! When I'm having lunch, taking shower and going to sleep, I think about easier and more fun ways to explain, and how it's related to the real world! When we have a class, I'll be happy and excited the whole day before!

Thank you for reading this long article, and let's meet in the class! I want to finish with my favorite saying in math.

"Philosophy is written in this grand book, the universe, which stands continually open to our gaze. But the book cannot be understood unless one first learns to comprehend the language and read the letters in which it is composed. It is written in the language of mathematics."

I just love math and want to share it with you!

I like talking to students about math, see which part the student feels difficult, and explain in a easier and interesting way.

When the students understand what they couldn't, and start to like math a little bit, that's my joy :)

I always taught my friends math since when I was a toddler.

When I went to college, my uncles and aunts asked me to teach my cousins, so I started my small business :)

When I went to America, someone asked me to teach her kids math, so I started to teach American kids.

I graduated a gifted highschool.  I was first ranked on many subjects, and math was one of those.

Everytime we finished a regular Korean SAT model test, all the students came to me, checked the answers and asked me to explain for them.  I used to spend 30~40 minutes out of a 100 minute time limit, then tried to figure out how to explain it in an easy way for my friends.

I'm preparing for my Ph.D. in Biology.  I don't have a degree in math, but I could finish highschool math before middle school, took college math classes in my college and taught myself advanced level math.  I loved teaching and explaining, so I taught from preschool kids to college students :)

I prefer casual conversation first.

I want to hear what the student wants to learn, what the goal of the class is, and how the student wants the class to be.

The student's goal is my goal!  I want to understand what the student wants and achieve it together.

When we start class regularly, I'll keep checking if you really understood it, if you remember last class, and if there's something you wonder about it :)

I want to show the new students it's not as difficult as you thought.  You're a smart person and just there was no one who explained to you in the right way!

"You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him discover it within himself."

From preschoolers to college students!

I don't think I've taught people older than college students, but I think I can do it unless it's above college level.

Everyone I studied with was talented!

Some of them were considered gifted, some of them were considered delayed.  But I believe that everyone has enough talent to do anything.  I could see the talent inside of them which others couldn't see.  The only thing I do is guiding them on the right way, which is different for everyone, then letting them realize that they can do it :)

It's an interesting question!

I think the most important two things are if the teacher is good at what you're going to study, and if the teacher actually likes it.

The first part is obvious.  The teacher should know way more than the student.  Teacher should have thought about most of things the students can ask.  These were the newest questions in my class-"why is Pythagorean theorem true?" "why is it '1/2(a+b) times h' to calculate the area of trapezoid?" "what is irrational number for?"  These are not that difficult questions, but not that many people can answer in logical and proper way to students.  If the teacher can't answer the questions in the right way, the burden is left for the student.  I'm talented in math and I spend way more time than students for a better class, always.

You need to study math with someone who likes math, a person who knows how to enjoy it, thinks about it often and gets excited for having classes with you!  You'll realize how fun math is, and the fact that we actually are living in the world of math!  It doesn't have to be me, but don't study with someone just works for money.  Study with someone who's going to be excited for the class :)

I have been working with an American highschooler recently.

She "was" a student afraid of math.  Her mother asked me to teach her Algebra 2.  After our first class, she said it was the first time she didn't cry after a math class.  Before we start a more complicated class, I checked her math and realized that she didn't have enough concept of previous levels of math, such as squares or fractions.

We started from Pre-Algebra, and we almost finished it in a month.  She was a quiet, talented student.  In the end, she could get all the right answers of advanced tests.  Honestly, I didn't expect that she's going to be that good in this short time.  She was talented, just no one knew it and no one knew how to make her realize that fact.

For now, she doesn't worry about college entrance at all.  She realized that it's not an impossible thing or something terrifying.  She's planning to study other classes such as Geometry and Pre-calculus with me after this class.  I'm so proud of her :)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I hope you first think about a big goal and small goals, such as "I want to take these classes in highschool, so I can go to this university and major in this !" or "Math is difficult. I just want it to be easy so I can like it a little bit more."  Then think about what you have studied and what you need to study.

Teachers would probably try to talk about it, so it'll be better knowing what you want to study and what you want to study for.  But more importantly, you should ask and talk to yourself.  Think by yourself and find your own way, then teachers will guide you there :)
