About Marina
I generally provide homework help in mostly Math, English, and History. Previously, I have helped with standardized test prep, public speaking, and some areas of study in the arts. I have 2 bachelor's degrees in philosophy and political science and a masters degree in business. I just took a little while off from tutoring but have years of experience in a variety of subjects and am happy to provide references upon request.
I've always enjoyed helping others discover their potential. My sister struggled from a young age to grasp topics that I found less challenging to master which frustrated both of us. I know that anyone can learn anything, but most classrooms simply don't provide sufficient resources such as time and patience to properly help children thrive. I aim to help those individuals out.
I first volunteered to tutor middle school students when I was a high school sophomore at the Harker School in San Jose.
I am a Political Science and Philosophy double major at Chapman University. I've always tested in the 98-99 percentile range for both Math and English.

Getting to know the student is essential. Everyone has different methods of learning, and pushing a student in the wrong way can do more harm than good. Generally, I will start by gaining an understanding of where the student is now and where they would like to end up. Sticking to a schedule can be quite helpful, but I'm quite adaptable to specific circumstances and open to trying any method that the student prefers.
I've worked with mostly elementary and middle school students. However, I have some experience with some high school students as well.
Patience in a tutor is key - regardless of the subject matter. Similarly, you need to find someone you can be comfortable with. Many kids will hold back and won't be completely honest about the topics they are confused or worried about if they don't feel like they can trust their tutor

My youngest daughter really benefited from her help. Marina was very helpful with homework and even watched both my kids on occasion. Great help in 5th and 6th grade subjects. Highly recommend Marina for your children. P.S. she helped us almost two years ago now but I was recently asked to give the review on this site. Hire her!
I was asked to provide a review for Marina's tutoring from before she worked in an official capacity. She tutored both of my sons when they were in the 2nd and 7th grade. Marina was most helpful when it came to writing and reading in the English and Social Studies classes. She did help one of my songs with his math for a while which was helpful but they struggled mostly with their writing.
My daughter really loved working Marina! Her Pre-Algebra improved much from her help. She also was good at writing and my daughter wrote such a good essay for her English class. Marina now helps my daughter with her singing and acting as well. She has great stories from the Fringe and high school and college.
