I like to spend the first part of the first session learning about the student's strengths, learning style, and areas that they would like to focus on. I then try to build this information into future lesson plans by encouraging student's to utilize and rely on content and ideas that they are more familiar with to approach subjects they find more challenging.
My biggest piece of advice would be to find a teacher that you connect with, but also one that challenges you. Finding this combination will make the sessions fun and engaging.
