About Christian

I help students problem-solve by looking at what areas of math they struggle with and then explain basic math concepts they'll need to use to find the solution. I utilize a step-by-step technique that students can use to problem-solve and go at their own pace.

In addition, I will do my best to help students see how their trouble-shooting skills apply to real-world situations. Building the bridge from mathematics to practical life can help them develop their own problem-solving skills.

I have a B.S. Degree in Statistics and an M.A. in Intercultural Studies. I've also attained a TESOL certificate in order to help students who struggle learning in English.

I started my teaching career in the Sylvan tutoring centers teaching Reading and Mathematics in elementary, middle, and high schools located in the Compton Unified School District. Afterwards, I taught Algebra and also Basic Reading skills to struggling students at La Mirada High School. I then transitioned as a professor helping adult language learners and college students develop their English skills at Cal Poly Pomona University and Hope International University.

What I really enjoy about the work I do is seeing students smile as they realize they've overcome a challenge. As a previous student who struggled significantly in school before, I understand students when they are looking for help but are not sure how to go about getting it.

I want to offer a step-by-step method of learning that has helped me boost my confidence when I was younger. The challenge of boosting students' self-confidence may be difficult but is definitely a path worth walking through.

My teaching career started as a Youth Director at my Community Church where I mentored high school students.  From there I found a passion for helping youth overcome their problems.  That's when I applied to teach at the Sylvan Learning Centers with centers throughout the Compton Unified School District.  Here I taught Reading skills to struggling students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels.  I also taught Math to help struggling seniors pass the Mathematics portion of their high school exit exam.  Then I went on to be a high school math teacher teaching Algebra for a year as well as Basic Reading skills.  Due to state budget cuts, I was laid off but didn't give up.  Then I pursued to help international students learn English as a Second Language.

To help break the ice, I would start off by having me and my student simply introducing ourselves( usually our names and hobbies) to one another. I would also ask them to bring their books, worksheets, notes, etc.. so I can get a better idea of what they know and what area they're working on.  Based on the worksheets and book they've provided me, I would have the students work on 2 problems to see how they perform. Then I can find out what questions they have and go from there.

I've worked with elementary, middle school, high school, and college students.  However, most of my career is working with students at the high school and college level.

One piece of advice I would share with my students is that they are definitely not alone in their struggles. Everyone approaches learning differently and thus learns at a different pace.  Learning is not only understanding the problem-solving techniques needed to complete an assignment.  It also involves our mental approach to those challenges which produce in us anxiety and fear.  The challenges they experience are meant to be overcome so they can teach these basic concepts to someone else who would be struggling ( Pass It Forward).

One of my Japanese students, Yohei, contacted me saying that he got a job at Universal Studios located in Osaka, Japan.  He contacted me because he needed tutoring in English communication since his job as Manager involved working with English-speaking performers.  In order to better help him, I asked him to analyze the culture of the back-stage and on-stage performance work that he would be involved in so we can identify specific phrases, nouns, and verbs that would be utilized.  So he did this and shared the results with me.  After doing so, I had a better understanding of the specific duties Yohei would have to perform as Manager.  We then developed a step-by-step process of putting these useful phrases, nouns, and verbs into real-life dialogue that he can utilize at the workplace.  As he saw the connection of what he was learning to what he was doing on set, his nervous demeanor started to transition into a more confident individual.  Helpihng students overcome their challenges and build confidence are reasons why I love teaching.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What question should I ask that would be useful for me?  Students should ask questions that would help the teacher better understand what specific needs they can help their students with.

- It is also possible that students cannot find the write words to formulate a useful question that would help them.  So they can also show their teacher specific example problems/questions that they struggle with.

- What part of the assignment gives me the most anxiety?

- Did I honestly try solving it on my own before getting help?
