About Tara
Helping students learn and reach their potential is a true passion of mine. Everyone struggles in life and learning isn't always easy. Learning is made by understanding misconceptions and learning from our mistakes. My goal is to help students gain confidence, success, organization and skills through this process.
I have 16 years of teaching middle school mathematics in St. Paul, MN. I have my Bachelor of Science in Education with a Mathematics focus from Minnesota State University Moorhead and a Master of Arts in Education from Hamline University. In addition to teaching, I have served many roles at my school including serving as the Mathematics Department Chair, Professional Learning Committee Leader and Tutor Coordinator.
My family is my pride and joy. My husband and I have two sons and we enjoy camping, biking and spending time on the lake. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, running, and knitting.
I absolutely love witnessing student experience those "ah ha" moments. Helping a student gain confidence and progress in their learning is truly my passion. I enjoy finding clever meaningful ways to help students learn.

I would:
1) start by getting to know the student by asking questions about what they enjoy doing outside of school and then academic-related questions like their favorite/least favorite subject(s) and why.
2) share information about myself.
3) ask in what areas does the student excel and need growth.
4)allow student to share their ideas for what they want out of tutoring.
4) spend time identifying misconceptions and gaps in knowledge.
5) articulate goals and a plan for our tutoring sessions ahead.
6) set up a Google spreadsheet that logs what we worked on, areas of strength, concern, etc. This would be shared with the family.
7)begin to tutor on our first topic by using appropriate examples, encouragment and opportunities to practice.
8)close the session by having the student summarize what was learned and by setting a goal for the next session.
