About Rebecca
Experience:
Over 7 years experience working for Army Child and Youth Services as a Homework Specialist (2013 - present, in HI & MD). Responsibilities: Elementary afterschool academic enrichment, which entails homework tutoring in math (including common core), reading, writing, and study/testing skills. Children mainly require math help, so that is where I have the most experience. I also have extensive knowledge of fun games, manipulatives, and strategies to help children practice the skills they need to develop for school and homework.
10+ years experience and training in working with children with special needs in a variety of settings, including children with ADHD/ADD, ODD, Autism Spectrum, seizures, learning delay, sensory processing disorders, anxiety, and depression. I recognize that every person is an individual and no two situations are alike. I am very skilled at building relationships with children and their families so I can provide the best education possible for that child.
5 years experience interning and teaching music both privately and in public schools, including elementary music and band (2005 - 2011, in VA).
Over 15 years experience as a volunteer homework tutor, mostly elementary, some middle school math and writing (2000 - 2019, in VA, CA, & MD).
Qualifications:
Masters in Education from Christopher Newport University (graduated 2010)
I have trained within my organization (Army CYS) to become a specialist in School Age programming, STEM, 4H, lesson planning, special needs inclusion (especially ADHD), and academic enrichment.
Bachelor's Degree in Music Education from Christopher Newport University (graduated 2009)
Hello! My name is Ms. Becca and I have been teaching for over 15 years. I have always had a passion for education and am a creative, down-to-earth teacher that enjoys helping kids learn new things and develop skills to successfully work toward their personal goals. I enjoy working to find that one strategy or that one game that helps give a child that "a-ha!" moment of understanding with something new that they are learning.

First I will introduce myself and assure them that I am here to help. A lot of my students come to me already feeling defeated by a difficult problem/concept, so I am ready with encouragement that they are not alone and we will work it out together with time and practice.
Ask the student (and parent) what help is needed so we can make the most productive use of our time.
For each different problem the child presents me, I have them show me what they know and will ask them about what they have practiced before at home or with a teacher.
As the student shows they need help with a step or a problem, I will walk them through it step by step, checking for understanding along the way. As I work through the problem with the student, I am actively assessing the student's understanding of the different skills being used, so I can adjust my teaching strategies to meet them where they are.
From there I can start to develop a base line of the student's understanding, and start to build from there, making sure their foundational knowledge is solid enough to support the development of new skills.
If a student is getting confused by a concept, I will show them a different way of solving that problem. I always practice with the student with a new strategy to see if it works for them. If not, then we move on to the next strategy. I am very comfortable adapting teaching strategies to meet different learning styles and needs.
I am patient and willing to practice/review a concept as much as they need, while building confidence and independence along the way.
