About Randy
For the past year, I have been a volunteer tutor teaching AP Physics to high school students, and watching them gradually develop confidence and curiosity has been one of the most fulfilling parts of my academic life. What motivates me as a tutor is seeing the moment when a topic that once felt abstract becomes intuitive, when a student realizes that physics is not a collection of formulas but a way to understand how the world works.
I approach teaching by breaking down complex concepts into their most essential physical ideas before introducing mathematical formalism. I have found that when students can first see and feel the reasoning, they become more willing to engage, ask questions, and think independently. Many of my students began by memorizing procedures, and I worked with them to replace memorization with understanding, encouraging them to derive results, test ideas, and explain phenomena in their own words.
Teaching has also shaped the way I learn. To explain a concept clearly, I need to understand it at a fundamental level, and tutoring has pushed me to deepen my own grasp of mechanics, electricity and magnetism, and problem solving strategies. More importantly, it has taught me patience and adaptability, and how to meet students where they are, whether that means providing structured examples or guiding them through open-ended reasoning.
I enjoy sharing physics because it is a subject that rewards curiosity, and I want students to feel empowered by the process of figuring things out. I hope to continue fostering this sense of confidence and discovery in the classroom.
