I ask them to get me topics they are confused on so I can brush up on the material prior to our meeting. I ask them come prepared with specific questions and problems they would like to work on. Then during the first session I like to review the students notes and work to get a clear idea of what they are doing and their organization skills. My most successful tutoring as been when the students do their homework before and come with the questions they were stuck on. Then I find similar problems and we practice them together and then I have them do some on their own and I check it. I also like to help with organizing the student and teaching them successful study tips and working habits.
I have worked with elementary level students all the way up to college level students ranging from basic mathematics to calculus 2.
