About Arwen
Here at Common Ground Martial Arts, it is our goal to not only teach self defense, but to also help with character development. Through the power of movement, we help our students reach their physical and emotional goals in martial arts and outside of the dojang.
My name is Kyo Sa Nim (Arwen) Taylor. I am 19 years old and have been training since I was 5. In the past 14 years, I have trained in several styles (Tang Soo Do, Kendo, Tae Kwon Do, Tai Chi, Shaolin Do, ect).
I am a 2nd dan as well as certified instructor (hence the name Kyo Sa Nim) in Tang Soo Do. I have been teaching for 7 years and don't plan on stopping anytime soon! I offer an array of classes. Whether you are looking for self defense, traditional martial arts or a good cardio kickboxing working out, I've got your back.
It is my goal as a teacher to not only help you with your physical goals through martial arts but to help you find your voice and power in yourself by doing so.
My parents have done martial arts their whole lives. When I was born, they both stopped and sold their school so they could take care of me (and my sister who came a little later). When I was 10, they decided to open a whole new school. We had a small part time program and taught for the YMCA's after school program.
Our first class there, we had 51 kids. My dad needed help. So, asked me to help him out and I did. I was 11 years old. And I fell in love with it!
I have been training in martial arts my whole life. I started at the age of 5 and have continue through.
I have trained in many styles but my highest held rank is in Tang Soo Do. In these past 14 years, I have earned my 2nd degree black belt (working towards 3rd for next year), my Kyo Sa Nim (certified instructor) title at the age of 14, national champion titles in tournaments as well as had the opportunity to work with 8th degree dan's (and higher) from all over the world.

About the lesson

I start off with a trial session. There we will get to know one another and discuss some of your goals! Also within that first class, I will teach a block, kick and another attack of some sort so feel things out and see how you like it! After that, classes are tailored to you! So, if you chose to continue we can create a full plan from there!
I have worked with a very wide variety of ages, abilities and sizes! There is no discrimination here! I teach anywhere from 4+.
Make sure you find someone who advocates for values you hold closely to you. Martial arts is intimidating and vulnerable at points. You want to be with someone you trust and someone you feel can uplift you in those sticky spots.
One of my favorite teaching moments was when my class if 5-6 years olds were working of teamwork drills. They were struggling to catch and throw the ball to their partners as instructed. A student who normally struggles with discipline and respect stopped because his partner was throwing the ball too hard and fast for him to catch. He said, "Excuse me, can you please throw the ball underhand and softer. I will be able to catch it then". His partner agreed and then they all started communicating kindly and respectfully. It was all pleases and thank you's. It made my heart happy.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Expressing emotions can be difficult. But, please try to remember that we are people too. Words and actions can hurt us as much as anyone else. It's very important to maintain that respect and thought while expressing. As teachers, we want to hear you. We want to help you solve the problems. It's our favorite part of the job but, we can't do that if we are dehumanized.

I typically charge $60 an hour - or a dollar a minute. Lessons are as long and often as you are looking for.
Payment is due monthly but, I am flexible if you talk to me first. :)
