About Michael
At Checkmat Charlotte, we strive to accomplish one goal. To make you a bertter version of you through the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The focus is entirely on you as a individual to improve your mental strength, physical fitness and technical proficiency in bjj. Here we are all family.
I have been in BJJ since 2001 and have accumulated a vast amount of knowledge that I love sharing with my students. Growing bjj and helping my students accomplish their goals is my life.

I start all my new students with a short one on one discussion about them , Jiu Jitsu and their goals. Once that is taken care of, i prefer to do a one on one assessment , so i can see where their physical attributes such as agility, strength and coocrdination are. After that, we hit the ground running and jump into training. Initially, we like for the new students to be cofortable with their own pace for the first two weeks.

Outstanding instruction. Michael Allen teaches in a way that puts you in the best position to learn based on your experience level, fitness level and age. He has an environment that is conducive to learning.
I never knew what I was getting myself into when I started training jiujitsu about a year ago. Professor Michael Allen is world class instructor. He keeps the mats and the rest of his facility VERY clean. My fiancé even started training here when the Queens Class moved to Sunday and now doing jiujitsu is a family ordeal. We love Checkmat Charlotte
I just started jiujitsu in April and the second I stepped on the mats I felt at home. The atmosphere is extremely welcoming and just incredible. Coach Michael Allen really takes his time with his students and I can see how much passion he has for teaching. I walked in having no clue what to expect, I was so nervous but I left after that first day just and just couldn’t wait to get back. I could not be happier with my decision to join this program and experience all it has to offer.
i have trained with checkmat charlotte for almost 2 years enjoyed it very much the classes are in a great family like atmosphere coach michel allen has a vast knowledge of grappling and not only in jiu jitsu but also in wrestling i would recommend checkmate charlotte for anybody wanting to start jiu jitsu wants to continue their jiu jitsu or for kids
I’ve been training with Professor Michael Allen at Checkmat Charlotte for the last 1.5 years. Professor Allen is an amazing coach and mentor - he cares personally for you, but isn’t afraid to challenge you to raise your game or give your all. This school makes you a better jiu jitsu player and person.
I've been with Michael and Checkmat Charlotte for just over a year now, but have trained on and off at different locations for the past several years. I currently attend his night classes and couldnt be happier with my experience. Michael has a keen sense of detail and takes the time to work with each student on an individual level. I'm really happy with how much I've improved over the past year and I owe it to Michael and the others at Checkmat Charlotte.
My kids and I all train at Checkmat Charlotte. We love our teammates and the friendly atmosphere. Great BJJ instruction and very family friendly!
